The difference with the MTV Unplugged series is the bands played their material live... it was basically an intimate live concert performance in a setting that you don't normally get to see your favourite bands perform in.

Meanwhile, Alanis is going back into the studio, with nothing to offer the world but the same album she released 10 years ago, but done acoustically instead of plugged in. Regardless of whether you like the artist or not, would you accept this as a serious offering, or just a quick way to scam a few bucks?

My vote would go in the scamming category.

And I won't lose any sleep over whether the Hip would do this, because I feel confident enough that they would never resort to this... they are way too cool and principled for that! :thumb:

See, that's exactly what I'm getting at. Some of you obviously hate her, not that I'm defending her, but I do like her and I think an acoustic version of JLP is a desparation ploy because she hasn't put anything new out in while that's really hit it as big as JLP. I think that JLP is AM's "Thriller". Artists usually only see albums like that once in their career.

BTW, should have known better than to throw out a "what if" question to a crowd of mostly MEN! I know how guys hate to play the "what if" game. Sorry guys.

If the Hip put out an acoustic re-issue of Day for Night, I'd be saying the same thing. Reissuing the same album with different arrangements is essentially admitting that you've got nothing new.

It's one thing to do an "unplugged" or alternate take release that covers your whole career. It's another to reissue the same album, going acoustic for that patina of sincerity.

What are "GREATEST HITS" cd's then? Aren't they a quick way to scam a few bucks?? Aren't the Hip releasing a greatest hits album?????

I know, the record comapnies force the artists to release greatest hits cd's, but maybe the record company was pushing Alanis to re-issue this "CLASSIC" album. I know I'm reaching here but......

I disagree. I don't think that's how Bono views himself at all. I recently watched a fantastic documentary on the situation in Africa, and he was quoted as saying that he thinks celebrity is silly and ridiculous, but that it's also a currency, and you can use that currency to do good things. When it comes to the charities he's involved with, he obviously does his research. Say what you want about him, but the guy knows his shit and he puts his money where his mouth is. At least he's using his fame to try and make some kind of difference, which is more than you can say for a lot of other celebrities of his ilk. If I had the kind of money and power that U2 has, I like to think I'd be doing the same thing.

I was a huge fan of U2 back in the 80's around the time Joshua Tree was out and then Rattle and Hum came out, btw that's movie theater experience I'll never duplicate again it was a blast, and back then it seemed like all they did was write songs about what was wrong and he would ramble on about it in concert. I don't like U2's stuff as much anymore but I do think Bono is actually doing things now instead of just writing about it and running his mouth.

It's just my own personal preference that I don't like getting told what to do by a MUSICIAN!!!!! I listen to music. The musicians provide music. I don't want to be hit over the head with their political views. Who the hell cares what musicians have to say about politics and the world? I certainly don't want to hear about it. Bono has a way of speaking that comes across to me as if he's saying "look people, you have to give money if you care at all about Africa". I don't appreciate being told what to do. I think a country should look after itself first, and then try to help other countries. Bono's attitude that we in North America are selfish people who don't care about the rest of the world is tiresome. I don't think Bono tells you or I to do anything. What he does is make us aware of issues that are important to him, and I don't see the foul in that.

Ever had a buddy say: "Man, I can't believe what is going on in Sudan. Have you heard?" Do you say: "Shut up man. You're a friggin accountant! What do you know?" I don't. I hear him or her out, and if I want to learn more I do my own legwork and form my own opinions. But I don't fault my buddy for taking a stand and trying to make people aware.

I just can't see a record company asking an artist to re-record the same album ten years later... why buy that version when you can just buy the original? That's why I think Alanis doing this is more cynical than artists who release greatest hits CDs to fulfill contract obligations.

Let's get one thing, at least, straight: Greatest Hits CDs aren't put out by artists. They're put out by record companies. All the songs are already recorded. There isn't really any work for the band to do.

Alanis has to come up with new arrangements of all the JLP songs and then go into the studio and record them. She's doing this in place of putting out something new, apparently. This is very different from a greatest hits CD.

I know everyone likes to view greatest hits collections as nothing but a cash grab, but the record companies put them out for a reason. They're a product people want to buy. They may not do anything for hardcore fans, who already own all the records, but for casual fans or for people who don't know a band at all, they let you get the songs you want without having to buy TATH and M@W. People in the real world don't care who's a "true fan" and who isn't. They just want to hear the music.

As far a someone telling me about an atrocity in another part of the world.... well I DON'T want to hear about it. I KNOW there are millions of innocent people dying around the world. I don't need to know about every specific poor country. What good is it to me? I can't really help these people so I don't see the point in hearing about ALL OF THEM!!! Guess what, there are POOR PEOPLE in North America too. There are poor people in Thailand, Holland, Mexico, Russia, Paraguay, Peru, etc... I guess part of it is the part in me that doesn't want to see PREACHING. I don't care for ministers or evangelists, and Bono is playing that role.

Apology accepted lol, thats cool, the only point I wanted to make is that its more in the context of why and how the artist in question goes about re-releasing an album, I dont believe the Hip would ever do what she did, but if they did an acoustic live show and taped it for release who among us wouldnt be jumping for joy? I dont see the need to re-do an album acoustically anyways, just do a mixed album if the music lends itself.

I dont see the need to re-do an album acoustically anyways, just do a mixed album if the music lends itself.

I get the feeling that the Hip are very careful and fussy about what they choose to put out. Look how long it's taken them to do a live DVD, while many of their peers have already released 2 or 3. Perhaps towards the end of their career we'll see a huge flood of Hip releases. But in the meantime while they're still a relevant and viable touring act, I don't think we'll see a lot of live albums, acoustic stuff, or rarities discs. But man, would that ever be nice if they did.
