I met Johnny in Long Island in '98, and he was great...signed my canada flag, chatted for a few minutes before hopping on the bus, and was very nice and took time for everyone who was waiting to meet him. He wasn't as "chatty" as Rob or Paul, but he wasn't a prick whatsoever....they were all fantastic, actually!!! (Paul will forever be my fave though, as he made sure I got his setlist, posed for numerous pics (hiding his McDonalds behind my back), and kept making faces at me throughout the show as I snapped countless pics...
but back to Johnny....this is a secondhand story, so take it as nothing more than that...while I was living in Scotland, my buds all went over to Dublin to check out the hip in '02...and my friend was talking with Johnny after the show. They decided to hop into a taxi to head into town to score some weed...I can't confirm, as I only saw the usual post-show pics.... but my friend, who is not one to spin tales and untruths, swears on his loved ones that this is true....

Two things about Johnny...
I went to univeristy and college in Niagara with a girl from Kingston who knew the Hip a long time. She used to baby sit some of their kids as newborns. Her fiance was a drummer in a band as well, and when I first met him, I asked him if he knew any of the band. He said he knew them all, but knew Johnny the most, taking lessons together. This is back in 96-97. He said once the band "got big", Johnny quickly changed, and would show up at local bars with two women on his arms, playing the big rock star gig...Take it for what its worth. This guy could just be jealous he didn't make it big. Anyways, story #2....
I met Johnny in Cleveland in 2002. During the second night, he had headphone trouble during the last quarter of the show, and was really pissed at the headphones and techs. So much so, that at the end of the show, he threw down the headphones, and stormed off. For the encore, Paul walked back on, and gave the finger to some tech guy at the back of the Odeon (not sure who it was, but everyone turned around to see). Again, headphone problems, and the show is now over. I'm waiting outside, after the show in front of the Odeon, and all of a sudden, a door flies open, and out walks little John Fay, all 5'2" of him (not that small, but small enough). The door almost hits me, and after a Whoa!, I realize its him. He's pissed, and with a touque on (in August?) he heads for the bus. I say, "hey Johnny" and he turns around, and signs my ticket stub. By this time some other people notice him and run over. I get out before he blows a gasket. Kind of a tempermental guy. Kind of like Paul's acoustic in the 1989 CFNY boot. (12/89)

I realize that a) everyone has different opinions and b) like everyone else on earth JF has good days and bad days...
but my $0.02 is that he is an incredibly nice guy, very down to earth and approachable. Very much like Bobby Baker imo.

I met Johnny and the rest of the band while waiting at the "Canada for Asia" concert at CBC studios in Toronto just last month and i have to say he is basically down to earth from what i could tell, I got them all to sign my album and he took the time to draw his little drumset with "the hip" on the bass drum. As i was still waiting outside during the broadcast he had come out a few times(looking for someone to arrive) and greeted me each time with a smile and a little comment.I`m not sure about the hand shaking thing as i had heard about it before and didn`t try to shake his hand when i had met him. I`m looking forward to meeting him again next month at the Steve Thomas charity hockey game in Markham.........Cheers..........Tiny
