Just because "Are We Family" (my fav. song off IBE) is soft, doesn't mean it's a love song. I think it is one of the darkest songs (next to Josephine and Gus) on the album. It's a spoof off of "We Are Family," and I think it's intent is to show how badly we as human beings treat each other. You may have a different interpretation, which I would be anxious to hear.

I agree, but I think it's more specifically about how badly family members can treat each other. No matter how shitty it gets, however, we're still family. That's sort of the point of marriage, saying I love and accept everything about you, we'll take care of each other unconditionally. It might not be the most romantic view of marriage, but it's real.

Yeah, that's all I was saying. I think you should give the bride/groom at least one day before they are shocked with the realization of what marriage is like.

The lyrics are "are we family?" not "we are family" and I think family is not meant literally here. It's the foil to "all my sisters and me" saying that everyone is out for themselves in a narccistic (definite spelling check) way.

Conversely, I will second the "every irrelevance" suggestion, what a lovely song.

The Hip don't have a lot of pure love songs do they ... even something like Lake Fever is twisted. Ahead by a Century is close, but everyone who knows the original lyrics knows there's darker intent behind "or sit silently and listen to our thoughts, with illusions of some day cast in a golden light". And then of course you have the hornet's sting and the feverish dream - neither of which is super positive.

Long Time Running - I guess so, but even there he's singing about a "safe mistake" and "getting left out in the cold".
