Got to attend a soundcheck at the hip's show in Calgary in November, 2000. Most people brought M@W or Phantom Power CD's to have signed, but a few of us had Live Between Us albums... Gord signed everyone of them "The yellow man" in reference to one of the pictures where his head is in faded silhouette with a bright yellow stagelight shining on him
That same night, the Mahones were playing across town at the Back Alley, I asked the guys if they were going over to check out the show. Every one of them started in about the lead singer of the Mahones and how they were in a band together a long time ago and how he owed everyone money. It was interesting that the had such similar responses. And then everyone but GD showed up at the Alley for the MAhones' set.

The only time I got to meet Gord was after his poetry reading in Calgary. He asked me my name and then wrote "now your in Troy country" on the same page as Starpainters which just happens to be my favorite. Best day ever!

i was born in st.john's newfoundland--adopted at 1 years old an brought to the states--lived my whole life in carolina-----when i greeted gordie i explained this with suitable flourish..i got right up beside him,cheek to cheek - eye to eye as if in a whispered secret between two weary travelers------- ...explaining that in my whole rememberance i had never returned to the land of my birth and that one day i would stand on those rocky shores....he said "whats your name friend"--i said chuck--" he auto graphed my phantom power cd--"chuck,long may your big jib draw-g.downie" --------he wrote like a whole songs worth of poetry on someone shirt that night---i wish they would post and tell us all what it says....

I met Gord, paul, and Robby at the mod club show in toronto. I had them sign my tragically hip Canada jersey. Gord asked what my name was and then right on the logo he wrote RYAN'S TEAM and then signed below, definately a night I wont soon forget. :thumb:

met the Hip four times 96 (avalon), 98 (Bill's bar) 2002 (somerville) and this past september 2004 show at Avalon again..

Re: inspiration for "Locked"
Gord said 'Locked' is really a song about 'Regret'. The lyrics grew out of a a station wagon he once saw parked along the side of the road in a remote area of the highway when they were touring by bus. It got him to think 'I wonder what's going on there?"
- when I asked about the "don't know how old I am/ they found armour in my belly" line Gord said 'It's refers to a shark... no one knows how old sharks are.."

"that's always been a song for the boys in the stands. It's our way of saying 'Time to pay the babysitter'.. (???)
