Good choice with GNR. Guns N Roses was my band back in the early 90's, loved Appetite, and When Use Your Illusions came out I was Fixated (Matt Sorum in place of Adler). Coma, Estranged and the rest, both albums ruled my world, now the Hip speak to me, but GNR was a part of who I was for a while.
Me too. I was a huge Gunners fan between 1988 and 1991. I was finishing junior high and heading into high school at the time, and my two favorite bands were Guns N' Roses and U2. That all started to change of course when I discovered the Hip in early 1990, but for a while there it was all about Axl and the boys. I remember lining up at HMV just before they opened at 10 AM to buy Illusion 1 & 2 when they came out. To this day I don't think I've ever seen a lineup that big for an album release. It was nuts. I think I started losing interest in them when they began using horns, an orchestra and back-up singers in concert. And then Axl let all the fame go to his head and he started acting like a dipshit, causing Izzy to quit and the rest of the band to fall apart in the process.
But my faith in rock n' roll was eventually restored when a little-known Canadian band called The Tragically Hip caught my attention, and faster than you could say Mr. Brownstone, I was finished with Gn'R. I soon developed an addiction to Canadian music, and I spent hours in record stores looking for albums by Canadian bands like 54-40, The Northern Pikes, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Grapes of Wrath, Blue Rodeo, and Spirit of the West. Ah, the memories!
Having said all that, I still love Appetite for Destruction. To me, that album (along with U2's The Joshua Tree) will always represent the part of my youth when I was first discovering music. That and the fact that it's an unparalleled rock n' roll masterpiece.
