Those two songs actually have a fairly similar sound. Vaccination Scar is far superior in every way, hands down, but as far as the actual sound of Gord and the band, it's close.

Listen to any song at all from UTH or RA. Then compare that song to a one from M@W or IVL (with relitavely the same tempo).

I think these are huge differences. Most of the UTH and RA songs are blues rock oriented, while the ones from M@W or IVL are more experimental sounding and many combine both electric and acoustic guitars. The vocals in this comparison is very very drastic if you listen closley - Listen to "Cordelia", and then listen to "Use It Up". Very very different vocal style.

I hate picking on tone-deafs... its part of my belief that music isn't music until it has been perceived by the audience... you know that whole music is art thing... but to not understand their diversity, and then compare them to Matthew Good(who I appreciate)??? I'm sorry, I'm confused... I believe Matthew Good released three relatively identical albums back-to-back-to back... from where I stand anyways... If I could classify the Hip as progressive (which generally, apparently, brings a negative resemblance to Rush(who is awesome), but more positively to The Rolling Stones(the biggest progressive rock band in history), their biggest influence) I would, but because of their radio success and the longevity of it people don't accept them as progressive... they are still hip...

and if by arbitrary songs you mean comparing two songs from different albums? Well thats my point... they don't sound similar no matter what two CD's you pull them from...

Blur and Matt Good? I only like one Blur song and Matt Good's solo stuff is the same as MGB except a little slower. He's still decent but to say he has evolved is pure crap.

I know what you're saying about the Hip. I also want to add that personally I think every album has unique elements and a different sound than the others (well, maybe not so much in the first two or three albums but after that). Just because you don't go out and make a complete crap disco album like U2 doesn't mean you aren't changing. Of course the Hip are the Hip, a rock band that will keep it's general core sound but they do evolve.

I used those bands as tentative examples. Generalizing their music isn't helping your argument(s). I'm stating an opinion here, don't argue that it's wrong or that I don't know what I'm talking about. It's not the case.

I agree with ya (even though that's irrelevant).

Maybe we're all biased because we're fans. We KNOW the Hip did these albums so in return we can't imagine anybody else doing them or the Hip doing anything else... kinda... if that makes sense.

They are diverse. One prime indication that a band is diverse is whether or not their fans are diverse. Avril Lavigne is not diverse because all her fans are girls and are like 13 or something and all her songs appeal to those by being the same songs about being angry at preteen boyfriends or something. But the Hip have a diverse group of fans.

Like here on the hipbase. I like the Tragically Hip and I also like Kid Rock just as much as I like the Hip. But how many people on here listen to Kid Rock? Exactly my point. Some people on here have talked about Matt Good. I don't personally like him at all but some do here that also like the Hip.

Music as art is just that. What is "art"? Blah blah blah. That whole question but some people like Frost, some like Downie, some like Warhol, some like Picasso, some hate art, some don't get it, some breathe it, some sleep it, some eat it, some think they know it but don't, some know it but don't care. It's one of those thing like in the "eye of the beholder" stuff. (Which I don't personally believe.) And I ramble, and I ramble, and I ramble, and I ramble....

Well, we all get to have opinions here, and if your saying the Hip haven't changed much since 1992, then my opinion is that, yes: you don't know what you're talking about. In fact, in my humble opinion, your statement is laughable.
