It's not always directly about the band or their music...which brings to mind the Chris Murphy (Sloan) quote from a while back in reference to TTH: "It's not the band I hate, it's the fans."... :oops:

I never really got into him. He's a pretty good songwriter and I like some of his stuff, but overall he just doesn't do it for me.

Were you there when Good took his car keys to that charity guitar at Fresh Fest (IIRC) 2001? A real class act.

A dude in one of my CMN classes had a "Matt Good: Rock and Roll's Number #1 Bad Boy" T-shirt. My first thought was: most "bad boys" don't usually need to tell you they're "bad boys." Hence the egotistical jerk part...

It's a little sad though because he's really NOT that big of a jerk and it's all about rumours being spread. Admittedly, he's done SOME things, but you also have to question how much of that is the media going nuts because a musician had the balls to say what we ALL know about Nickleback

In interviews he always seems to be a lil upset when all the interviewer wants to do it talk about who or what he hates. He also seems a little sad that his reputation preceeds him wherever he goes.

but that's enough matt love for me. The Hip still rock the world the most!

I really didn't like his first solo attempt, the two singles were great but everything is was crap. This album does seem like a huge step up for him though. I'll take my chances again and buy it.

He didn't actually mention the Universal band he was talking about. I think he implied that it was the Hip but there were two possible bands he was talking about I believe.

That Sloan quote is funny. I worked with someone who is a huge Sloan fan. He mentioned that quote all the time and couldn't stop going on about their drummer and how he is the best drummer in Canada. I think Sloan are pretty good musicians and I actually respect them because of their attitude. They claim to be one of the best bands in the world, especially Andrew, and all with a straight face. They're serious! BUT then I'll see Chris Murphy in an interview say something like, "Well, we have to say we're the best band" with a smirk and hinting that it's all tongue in cheek just like their lyrics.

Honestly, I think I would feel the same as Sloan and probably a lot of other bands that have opened for the Hip. If I was playing a concert and all I heard were drunk chants of "HIP, HIP, HIP" during my set I don't think I'd be too excited. Personally, I don't think the Hip should have an opening act because of this and the fact that I go to see the main attraction, not the opener (usually anway). I saw Gord and TCOM and Nathan Wiley was the opener and it would have made no difference to me if Nathan Wiley hadn't even shown up.

I just picked it up today, and it's catchy old school rock... one thing that bothers me is the apparent 'borrowing' of the riff's in Put Out Your Lights (which sounds a bit to much like 'Rocking in the free world') and Ex-Pats (which is a blatant rip-off of The Who's We Won't Get Fooled Again)... all in all though, pretty solid, and better than his last solo album.

I've tried to hate him for saying mean things about the hip (I don't even know what he said tho) but I just can't -- he's too good!

In an interview, he said he was a fan of Gord's solo stuff, so that should count for something.

In another interview I read, he called Gord an "amazing writer". In the same interview, he dissed at least three bands: OLP (who he hates with a passion), Nickelback (who he hates even more than OLP), and the Hip. However, he did clarify that his only problem with the Hip is that they end every song with a guitar solo...which tells me that he's never really listened to a lot of their music. In Violet Light for example only has one song that ends with a solo (The Darkest One).

That's funny. I heard an audio clip on an interview a while ago and he dissed OLP and The Hip. He said the Hip were the greatest bar band in the world. Also, he criticized them for never having guitar solos and I think he mentioned that The Hip and OLP kept get rich from putting out album after album of the same music. He said that's the problem with music in Canada, that it's all the same and bands don't reinvent themselves enough.

I'll say some songs of Matt Good are pretty excellent..
Weapon, In A World Called Catastrophe, good good....
Although in the very few interviews I've seen him in,
He kinda gives me the impression that
"the new gimick in sho-biz is to have no gimick" cratch:
But this is by no means a diss. My sister likes him...
And I still can't get Apparitions out of my head... :oops:

Interesting. First he criticizes them for soloing too much, and then he criticizes them for not soloing enough. Make up your mind, Matt.
As for his reinvention comment, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Sure, the Hip aren't exactly reinventing rock n' roll, but neither is Matt Good. I've listened to a lot of his stuff over the last few years, and he isn't exactly what I would call groundbreaking. This guy really needs to spend more time making music and less time talking out of his ass.
