I have to agree with High on this one; to me "ranking" Hip discs has always been a fruitless exercise, for a very simple reason. I've grown up with these guys...from my final year in high school (EP) to humble frosh at university (UTH), through the various trials and tribulations that 4 years in that setting bring (RA, FC), to grad school (D4N) and my first job experience (TATH), followed by the birth of my two boys (PP, M@W) and on to the present (IVL)...

Trying to pry each disc out of their specific place in the "soundtrack of my life" is next to impossible, as listening to each one brings back memories (good and bad) of that time, and my prevailing thoughts on any give CD are biased as a result...

All that said, for what it's worth, IVL is still one of only 3 Hip CDs I can listen to first to last track without feeling the need to skip somewhere along the way (the others being UTH and FC)...take that for what you will...

I guess IVL is near the bottom on most people's list. I wondered if it was just me.

Rating each hip disc is a futile effort for me. It changes all the time.

I'm like Mike in that each disc holds different memories for me and ranking them dosen't really work.

IVL is a great disc though, by the looks of the lists on here it's highly underrated.

I dont know, but there is something about Are you Ready that just drives me up the friggin wall. It just sounds so...trite is the word i'm looking for i guess.

My 6-year old loves that tune and I've caught him numerous times after I've had it on in the car screaming "Are you ready...." a half hour after the fact...The song never really did it for me upon first listen (if memory serves, it was one of the final tracks added, bumping the likes of Problem Bears and Ultra Mundane), but with that vision in my head everytime it comes on, it definitely skews my views... :lol:

I've consciously avoided playing "Coconut Cream" in his presence...I can just see the day when a rather ominous note arrives home from his kindergarten teacher...

Like Royce and Mike, and i'm sure the vast majority of us, my tastes change and some songs have special meaning, but... being a former goalie , I love stats and have to take a stab at this , love compiling the numbers. I thought I'd contribute my thoughts. Seems kinda fun and it takes away from my job for a few minutes.

1. Fully Completely (Was my very first hip album and what got me started in the hip)
2. Road Apples (If they ever make an album as rocking as this, I'll cry...Little Bones, Twist My Arm, Verge, Born in the Water.....just a solid rocking record.
3. Day For Night (Very epic album and a complete change in style of music....and they even gave us 14 tracks to ponder instead of 11 or 12.
4. Up To Here (Almost impossible to skip a track on this disc. Even the slower songs like Boots or Hearts...if you crank it really loud, you'll still find yourself singing like a madman).
5. In Violet Light (I know most of you think this isn't there best album, but how many of you find yourselves ranting throughout the last 2.5 minutes of Leave, or emphazising Beautiful Thing at the chorus. Trying burning the album with Forest Edge, Ultra Mundane, Problem Bears and Oh Honey on the end...gives yourself 15 tracks to rock out too instead. Well worth it)
6. Phantom Power (Songs about breasts, hockey, winter, penguins, and probably the best cover art they have. Never skip a track either)
7. Music at Work (After Sharks is over, I take the record out. I know Pines, Mountain Honey and ok tunes but it starts to get a little dull after that)
8. EP (I love hearing this disc. Not my favorite because it's too short but good if you have a half hour drive to work in the morning and you want to get a whole disc of music in)
9. Trouble at the Henhouse (No song on this album makes me want to put it in my cd player. Well maybe two, Apartment Song and 700ft Ceiling. If they released this as a 2 song disc, I'd still pay the 12 bucks for it.)
10. Live Between Us (This would be number 1 if they released it as a double live cd and didn't cut out some awesome tunes)

Yeah, joking ,hehehehe. :oops: In my "defense" (no pun intended) our team was lacking in defensive play. (50+shots a game was the norm, I remember facing 3 on 0's!) I did snag mvp for the team, regardless of what i'm guessing was... about an 0-12 record. I remember being optimistic towards the end of the year thinking if I can let in 6 or less goals I could bump my GAA below 10. (I also recall letting in some brutal ones, behind the icing line from in the corner.)We only scored 2 or 3 goals a game. The next year I was on a beer league team. :mrgreen:

This was really enlightening! I've wondered where the albums fell in my mind before, and even though they go up and down with my moods, I think this is the average order. I got started on the Hip when a friend made me listen to ABAC when it was new. Fully Completely was the first cd i bought, so that may be why it's #1. Here we go:

1. Fully Completely - 9.17
Lowest score 6-Lionized, and 10's for: 100th, Wheat, Locked, 50, and Pigeon. Great for all out singing.

2. Up To Here - 8.73
Low of 7's for She Didn't Know, Everytime You Go, and 10's for: Boots, Trickle, and Midnight. I suspected that this would be #1. This cd makes me happy.

3. Live Between Us - 8.62
Low of 8 on a bunch, and 10's for Grace, Too and ABAC. A bit of a surprise at #3, but it is so fun to sing along with Gord's rants.

4. Day For Night - 8.43
Low of 7's for Fire in the Hole and Emergency, and 10's for Grace, Too and Thugs. I thought it would be lower, but there are no songs to bring it down I guess. Thugs could be my all time favorite hip song

5. Phantom Power - 8.33
Low of 6's for Save the Planet and Rules, and 10's for Poets, Bobcaygeon and Emperor Penguin. I remember that this was the first album that I waited for to come out, and we were on vacation in Cape Breton with no music stores near, so I went to Home Hardware every day to check their little music section, but it didn't get in until after I left. haha, I didn't much like it at first, after so much anticipation, but I love it now

6. Trouble at the Henhouse - 8.17
Low of 6 for Coconut Creme, 10's for ABAC and Let's Stay Engaged. I really like the end of this disc, but I was scared to like Let's Stay Engaged for a long time, even though I liked the sound of it because I thought it was "Let's Stay Gay"

7. Music @ Work - 8.14
Lows of 7 for 5 songs, 10's for Stay and Completists. I don't listen to this one too much anymore, but its got a few I really like. Toronto #4 sticks out too. Kind of like Unplucked Gems

8. In Violet Light - 8.09
Low of 6 for Are You Ready, and 5 9's. I really like the quieter songs on this one, and Silver Jet. The first 2 are weak I think though. Beautiful Thing is great, but the chorus can be a bit much at times

9. Road Apples - 7.83
Low of 6's for Born in the Water, Bring it all Back, and Fight. 10's for Long Time Running and Unplucked Gems. How can a classic like RA be down so low???? Not sure, I guess the 6's did it. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it, but these few don't do much for me at all.

10. EP - 6.75
Low of 5 for Killing Time, 9 for Highway Girl. This cd is cool to see how they started, but rarely listened to.

I realize that this is quite long, but I am new here and really excited to finally find a place where people are as excited as I am about the Hip. I loved reading some posts about song meanings, it made me appreciate some songs in a whole new light. I also have not heard the 2 new songs, and am dying to. My two cents… IVL rated seventh out of 9

1.Day for Night
The best album I've ever heard. A dark, thoughtful and enigmatic record full of beatiful, snarling guitars and thick, throbbing bass lines.
2.Phantom Power
The quintessential folk rock album, and quite deservedly a Canadian classic. This music is satisfying, classy and often very beautiful. It’s surprising that the Hip have only done one record like this, though their music for the TV movie Justice bears a certain similarity.
3.Road Apples
Delicious Rock n' Roll of the highest order. An album that both excites and impresses.
4.Fully Completely
Although I distain the occasionally stuffy production, this is another all-but perfect set of songs. Compelling, ageless, and occasionally difficult hard rock, with the Hip finally abandoning the early-period bar rock exemplified by the LP.
5.Up to Here
The first real sign of life from the Hip also something of a classic. Only one or two songs on this record would fail to make frequent radio airplay in the ensuing decade. If Gord was more of an entertainer/storyteller here than a poet, he was still a visionary and a commanding presence.
6.Trouble in the Henhouse
A more modest, home-made sounding take on the darker feel of Day for Night, its predecessor. A fine record full of underrated songs.
7.In Violet Light
Here, they trimmed back the excesses of M@W for a tight, bravely cerebral record, vaguely reminiscent of Phantom Power (only about 50% of the tracks are rockers). Gord’s songwriting is peak, but not always well-paired with the instrumentals. The production is too tame. This is a tight, interesting album that isn’t their best but raises interesting questions about the future.
8.Music @ Work
Remix and edit M@W, and you could have a great rock album equal to, say Up to Here. But it’s a bit too long, The Completists is just plain odd, Gord isn’t always in very good voice, and the record’s crowded production gets in the way. Still, there are some gems here played live all too infrequently.
9.Self-Titled Lp
It doesn’t get more formative than this. For hardcore fans only.
