least favorite hip song (3 Merged)
#16

Well spoken Kari! Of course every song of The Hip can't be brilliant. But to my opinion, their worst song still is a lot better than the best song of a lot of other bands.

i would agree with beat. In fact when i started this posting it was originally going to be the 3 least favorite songs but i found it hard to come up 3 i really didn't like.

college-frat-beer-guzzlin'-flag-waving-posher-types..............thats a little harsh, but once you actually hear what I'm saying, you may start to see what I am getting at. I simply would like to state that their is no tragically hip song existing that i have not recieved genuine wisdom, groove or inspiration. If the song doesn't groove or "dance" in my head, I have found that it hits me at a different intellectual level. Generally speaking, most of everyones "most disliked tunes" tended to revolve around songs that are hard to get into musically, I challenge all of you to take it to another level. I found it quite amusing that I found a Hip fan site today, and the first thing that i clicked into was a most hated song pole. I think there are better conversational appitizers out there. After all its just like Gord says "its music that can take you away.......

Hello again!

To comment, yet again: "college-frat-beer-guzzlin'-flag-waving-posher-types..............thats a little harsh". Have you ever been to a concert where you see these types of people?? They don't have an intelligent word to say besides "Hip! Hip! Hip! Hip!", or "The Hip rock, man". By the way, 'posher' was meant to read as 'mosher'. Typo, sorry.

Anyway...

..."but once you actually hear what I'm saying, you may start to see what I am getting at. Wow, have you read that back to yourself yet?? Not to sound harsh, but you sound like Gord during interviews with the press (trying to sound super intelligent, far beyond his years, almost like a great old poet). I remember asking Gord why he tries to be so eloquent during these interviews. His answer, to paraphrase, was something to the effect that 'I really likes to see the expressions on their faces. They look perplexed and then stare at me in amazement, thinking I'm the next prophet of our time.' I wish I could remember exactly how he phrased it. But anyway, he was poking fun at the way people put him on this pedestal thinking he's just beyond his being, when really he's just a simple joe-schmoe who likes to hang out and play catch with his kids, watch Cartoon network, and sits back to enjoy a few cold ones on a summer evening grilling for the family (you get the idea). Wow, I ramble...

"...Generally speaking, most of everyones "most disliked tunes" tended to revolve around songs that are hard to get into musically,..."

Myself, I disagree. I think the lyrics to the two songs I dislike the most by The Hip (The Apartment Song, and Tiger the Lion) are quite boring. Doesn't titilate my senses at all. But that's just me.

..."I found it quite amusing that I found a Hip fan site today, and the first thing that i clicked into was a most hated song pole. I think there are better conversational appitizers out there..."

Stick around this site for a while, you'll see we talk about various topics Hip related. You just happened to stumble across a recent topic, which I thought was a valid topic. No topic is a wrong topic.

Very well put Kari!! This guy isn't being very objective, is he?
First he should take a few days and catch up on all topics posted in all forums to learn about what already has and hasn't been discussed.
Obviously, some of the newer topics are ones that haven't yet been touched upon, for various reasons. The worst song thread was bound to come up when many of the other topics had been exhausted. He just came by at the wrong time. I'm as big a Hip nut as you are, or even as he is, but for him to say that no song is really the worse than any other is pretty naive in my opinion. Inevitably, some songs strike a deeper chord than others. Out of the 80 or so studio songs The Hip have wrote and recorded, I find it very hard to put all of them on the same pedestal. There will always be ones that are better and ones that are not. Beat is so right when he says "the worst Hip song is better than anything else out there." I think if everyone keeps that credo, we can be objectionable about their music. I don't think this guy knows what objectionable means. Maybe he tries to make The Hip bigger than they are to his friends and they flame him for it, so he comes here thinking that we're all a bunch of no-brain-followers with nothing to say. As for this guy flaming everyone for speaking their mind, he probably has trouble with bigger things besides the Hipbase forum, let alone trying to phathom that someone may find one song better than another.
Kari, you are so in the right, thank you for defending the forum, because it's just that: a forum of discussion. If this guy wants to impose his 'do-no-wrong Hip will' on people, maybe he should go to the States. He'll have his hands full there.

just my 10 cents (2 cents isn't enough sometimes)

kari,
how are you able to have all these conversations with Gord? I mean how can I get in on one of these, life long dream.
"she's the horrible esthete
and she hate her ugly feet
and at all place where friends all meet
she take her shoes off and invites everyone to see"
gotta love this line! If this doesn't perfectly explain a comfort only found within friends, I don't know what to say!

whatever TLB, I can't believe you actually wasted your time writting that and my time reading that. It must be hard to have absolutly nothing to say or contribute to a conversation, for that I feel sorry for you. Its funny how easy it is come up with a hip lyric for almost any situation, "to move thorugh life with very little else to say". Where were you going with the whole flamming thing anyways, sure I might have said a few derogatory statements myself, but I actually had a point and direction. If not to defend some of my favourite songs that people were ripping, i think I stimulated some thought towards the different moods and aspects a song can inhibit. I say whatever to you....jer

I really like that quote. Care to elaborate on that... what else did he say in that quote? And where did he say that?

ha ha ha Lance
I'm a lover not a fighter Smile

or if I could use a Gord lyric here
"I'm not a soldier of fortune, I'm a fool for love"

you know how people have a word of the day they try to use each day,
well you think Jeromio walks around trying to incorporate a Hip lyric of the day into his conversations with the outside world?

jeromio Wrote:I can't really call any of you guys true hip fans. First of all if anyone of you were literate, you would realize there isn't a song out there that Gord hasn't made a lyrical masterpiece out of. AND TO THE SHMUCKS THAT PICKED THE LUXURY AS A SHITTY SONG! WELL if this line isn't one of the best all time hip lyrics please shot me:
"why are you partial to that playboy con
when you can see me naked anytime you want
if i had loads of money to
make me tame and sour i could pay you to remind of my baby by the hour "
YOu guys should go back to your roots a little, I mean that is geneous.

Im sorry but some good lyrics arent gonna change my opinion. The song has just never caught with me. Hell, they probably have worst songs, but I am just a new fan and Im not familiar with EVERY song.
