top 5 hip shows of all time
#16

Yeah, 1993 ARA shows would have been on my next 5 -- if I recall, that was Ottawa at Lansdowne Park. I have a not great sounded boot of that show. I think anywhere but Canada Hip would have been opening for Midnight Oil at that stage -- Midnight Oil had some huge hits at the time. I recall thinking they were OK, but I never really got into them, likely because Beds are Burning was overplayed.

I do remember Hothouse Flowers were pretty good. Daniel Lanois was also on that bill, and did not go over that great -- a bit mellow for a outdoor festival show. Maybe Crash Vegas and Spirit of the West on that tour? The next ARA I liked some of the support bands much better -- I saw a few stops on that one. Was my live introduction to Wilco, Sheryl Crow was pretty good, Matthew Sweet was in his prime....

I think Wilco and Sheryl Crow (also Ashley MacIasac and Los Lobos) and Matthew Sweet was 1995 (along with Ziggy Marley and Blues Traveller).

Yup Lansdowne Park. If I remember correctly, the full line up in order was Crash Vegas, Hothouse Flowers, Daniel Lanois, Midnight Oil, The Hip. The main thing I remember was that Midnight Oil cranked the volume on their set, my ears were shot before The Hip even hit the stage and rang for three days after ward. I remember getting into the car after the show and having to literally yell to carry on a casual conversation.

Other thing that always bugged me about the show was the bootleg and the setlist was never right. The Hip played Thugs that night, 10000% certain on that. Gord introduced it, I didn't quite make out the title (due to my ears thanks to Midnight Oil) and asked my girlfriend what he said. She said "I think he said it was called Fudge?". When Day For Night came out, I remember flipping it over and looking for this song called Fudge, LOL.

Definitely in my top 5 shows.

1. FC tour, Massey Hall night 2. (Didn't realize till half way through that I was sitting beside Paul's parents)
2. ARA 93 - Lansdowne Park
3. 2006 Summer Fling - Belleville Ontario
4. 2004 IVL Tour - Grand Rapids Michigan (great set list - Flamenco, Inevitability Of Death, 700ft Ceiling, Membership, etc)
5. 2007 IBE Tour - Cleveland House of Blues (Emperor Penguin - enough said)

I'm at 25 or 26 shows--think it's 26; I'll have to think about it--and the top five are as follows:

1. Calgary, 9/21/09 - Five reasons: t, h, u, g, and s.
2. Ottawa, Bluesfest 2004 - Just one of those magical concerts that wasn't special for any one particular reason but really special at the same time
3. Fort York, 6/24/06 - You know why.
4. Apple Valley, 7/8/00 - You never forget your first time. To those who haven't been to the Minnesota State Zoo Amphitheatre: imagine a university lecture hall with a stage at the front and a lake behind the stage. That's literally it. The band came in through a path in the woods. Pretty much the greatest show ever if you're a M@W fan.
5. Thunder Bay, 1/22/07 - "They shot a movie once in your hometown" in my actual hometown, "Fireworks" and "Lonely End of the Rink" in the building where I learned how to skate, a Dylan cover, "On the Verge," Kathleen Edwards!

Lots of great suggestions here for other shows to check out - thanks everyone.

Two shows I've been listening to lately are both from Ottawa:
1996-11-29 - Corel Center (the '96 tour was really strong)
2000-12-06 - Corel Center (I thought the first half of this set was outstanding)
