i loved all of these shows, the only one i meeds was the MLG in '95

Wow @ that list. You know they've played shows outside of Ontatio, right?

It's tough to rank Hip shows since over the years the tours usually follow similar song numbers and setlists. It's not like they go out and do a 30+ song blowout to end a tour like Pearl Jam.

I should have listed the list as top shows in the GTA lol

I agree they are no pearl jam or phish
it is upsetting because they had so much potential to be like that
they used to be committed to a different show each night

Top 5 Hip shows I've ever seen:

1. Race City Speedway, Calgary 1993 (Another Roadside Attraction)
2. Sasquatch Festival, The Gorge, 2006
3. High Sierra Festival, Novato, California, 1998
4. Somerville Theater, Boston, 2002
5. Fillmore, San Francisco, 2009

I guess this will be of all time...that I have seen.

1. Day for Night Tour -- Kingston in the old Memorial center. My favorite record, and I think the peak live performance era for the band. I skipped work and stood in a snow storm to get tickets.
2. Fully Completely Tour -- Richardson Stadium Kingston. Andrew Cash and The Headstones opened, it poured rain until the hip hit the stage. I heard soundcheck of what would become a few songs, including Nautical Disaster, while picking up my tickets.
3. Road Apples Tour -- Ottawa Congress center. First time I can recall the microphone stand battle, during Fight (would love that song to return to a setlist. The Waltons opened.
4. World Container Tour -- warm up show in Brockville before the opening of the new Kingston arena.
5. Trouble Tour -- Irving Plaza, NYC. My first time seeing the Hip out of Canada.

I could easily do another 5 (In Violet Light tour in Syracuse, Ottawa Civic Center Day for Night. WATS at NAC in Ottawa, ARA in Buffalo and Ottawa/Stittsville Speedway....lots of shows since buying that cassette copy of UTH in 1989)

Ottawa Nov. 28, 1996 - my first hip show, and it was one to remember. They played 4 tunes off off UTH, including Everytime you Go (which isn't listed on the official setlist, even though I've emailed the band about it...) which really surprised me.
Rochester Nov 6, 2012 - Just an amazing setlist, including So Hard Done By, On the Verge and Yawning or Snarling. I didn't know what to expect that night, it seemed like any song was on the table and it was a great night!
Kingston, Feb 23, 2008 - opened the K-Rock Centre, played an amazing setlist (38 Years Old, On the Verge, Pigeon Camera, and a very emotional Fiddler's Green), and were joined by Dan Aykroyd on harmonica for Locked. Just an awesome night.
Calgary, Oct 30, 2006 - very balanced setlist, including Gems, Sherpa, Thugs
Rochester, Oct 19, 2004 - Opened with You're Everywhere, and got better from there.

Four of the five I listed are pre-1996, one the NYC show would have been in 1996 (if I recall, and too lazy to look it up). Those shows were all special, but post-1996 still some great shows, just the venues get bigger, production gets a bit bigger, and as a result the shows have a bit less of the "unexpected".

I had one on my list: Another Roadside Attraction, July, 1993 in Calgary.

This was the show that solidified the Hip's place as my all-time favorite band. They co-headlined with Midnight Oil on that tour, and they had the unfortunate position of having to go on after the mighty Oils every night. Anyone who's ever seen Midnight Oil live knows that's a very tough act to follow. But the Hip pulled it off, proving that they were big league players as a live act, and they blew everybody's minds in the process. The guys in Midnight Oil were thoroughly impressed as well. I remember Oils lead singer Peter Garrett describing the Hip as one of the best live bands he'd ever seen.

Anyway, it was a hell of a show. I can't remember much of the Hip's setlist that night, but I do remember they opened with Locked and Downie's first words to the crowd were: "to me you all look like Salmon Rushdie!" This tour also featured the live debut of Nautical Disaster, which of course emerged from the middle section of New Orleans is Sinking.

I didn't say they shouldn't have been headlining. I just meant that at the time it must have been difficult to follow Midnight Oil every night on a tour where the Hip were headlining a large festival for the first time. The Hip even admitted at the time that this would be a big challenge for them. And of course they rose to the occasion. After that tour, Hip mania was in full swing and they became the biggest homegrown band this country had ever seen. That was such a fun time to be a fan of Canadian music.

As much as I love the Hip. I have seen Midnight Oil several times and couldn't imagine ANYONE wanting to follow them....unbelievably powerful band. :thumb:
