Songs better suited on album than performed live...
#16

I like Nautical Disaster live, mostly for the obligatory rants, but for actual sound quality, it doesn't compare well to the studio version. It's so murky, and dark, on the album, but the live just sounds generic.

I think Giftshop is infititely better live. So much more powerful!

I agree gift shop is amazing live.

If we were to go Vise-Versa, I would say the number on song that is 100x better live than on the album- Summers Killing Us. Album version jsut seems half ass. But night in toronot- they kill it

I agree. 'Summer' is way better live than on record.

I hear nothing 'half ass' on the album version. Gord busts his ass on that recording, and the guitars shred.

The guitar solo in the live performances puts it over the top for me, personally. Also, Johnny's work on the drums seems to raise a few notches when he plays Summer live. It's not bad on the album, but it's so friggin' awesome live.

I can never get into Gift Shop live either. I just expect a lot more and it always seems to leave me wanting.

Kids a song that was made to be played live! It has so much power and Gord just sings it with such emotion. Much better live... maybe the youtube video didn't do it justice!

I do.
It is a great, great song but I would much rather hear it on the album also.
At least until they can recreate the album feel in concert.
With the possible exception of Kingston '08

If you ever get the chance to hear the version of Calgary '06, the first time they played it live, do it... I still get shivers when I think about it or hear it! Just incredible!

Love Is A First.

The ranting sounds forced live.

Well, once you hear it live, your opinion will change!
Love is a first was def one of the best from all 3 hip shows in the "NER"

I actually feel the complete opposite. I think the entire song is rather weak, and could not get into it at all on the album or on the radio, but seeing live as the opener for night 2 in Kitchener opened my eyes to it. I still don't think it's a very good song, but it worked well as a high energy opener in the live setting.

I think 100th Meridian is a lot better on the album than live. To me the whole appeal of the song is the slow, intense, driving groove of the song and that gets completely lost live. Not to mention that hearing it played live at almost every show I've been to has become slightly boring.

Wow, I totally disagree on that one. Meridian is an absolute monster when played live. I love when it kicks into the middle jam section and the band just lets loose and rips it up. It's amazing how in tune they are with each other on stage, and it's always a treat hearing them play off one another.

Most improved songs live: Springtime in Vienna, Are We Family, Tiger the Lion, Poets, 100th Meridian

Songs that lose something live: Honey, Please; As Makeshift As We Are; Freak Turbulence

Cheers,
John
