I got to thinking about which songs are better studio songs than live songs. We all know that The Hip are a great live band, and they make most songs better when they play them live. However, there are some songs that I just think don't translate all that well in a live setting.
The Rules -- I love this song, but I think it's best as a studio recording. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't complain if it was played live at a show I was attending, but the studio recording is just so perfect.
A Beautiful Thing - Sounds great on IVL. I heard a version on SOTD that was awful. Maybe Rob just had an off day or whatever. Anyway, I don't think the band can really match the studio version in a live setting.
Flamenco - Not much to say about this one. It's not terrible live, but it's just not a great live song.
Wheat Kings - The studio version just has such a great vibe .
Fiddler's Green - It was awesome to hear the song in Charlottetown, but the studio version is just so sombre and chilling.

I have to say if you heard the live version of Fiddler's Green when they opened the K-Rock centre in Kingston, you might change your mind.

Gift Shop.
For some strange reason they've never been able to re-capture the majesty of the studio version in a live setting. Robby has done some amazing solos over the years, and the one he plays at the tail end of the song (on the album) is nothing short of magical.

If you knew Fiddler's Green lyrics and the meaning and reason's to behind why Gord wrote them, you'd think Fiddler's Green is absolutely amazing live.

It is a great, great song but I would much rather hear it on the album also.
At least until they can recreate the album feel in concert.
With the possible exception of Kingston '08

I know I'll get slammed for this but I like the studio version of these better but I do love it when they play them live....
Nautical: studio version is awesome the guitars seem way more tough and biting
Pigeon Camera: love Bakers solo and sound on the studio version...have to believe that was a strat and not the PRS

Doesn't happen often, but I completely disagree with you on this one.
I think that as this tune has fallen into their more 'regular' rotation, it has lost a little of the 'majesty' so to speak, but I remember being absolutely mesmerized by this tune during the 96 tour and the few that followed. Some of those great renditions helped make this tune one of my faves....

I wasn't the biggest fan of Gift Shop until the other night. Jim Bryson makes all the difference. The intro is incredible with him on the keyboards. I'm actually hoping to hear it again during the next few Massey shows!

Similarly, when Chris Brown did that spooky keyboard intro to Giftshop on the 2000 "evening with..." tours, it made a big difference in how it came off live.

I agree gift shop is amazing live.
If we were to go Vise-Versa, I would say the number on song that is 100x better live than on the album- Summers Killing Us. Album version jsut seems half ass. But night in toronot- they kill it
