I really don't have a problem with it. I actually chuckled a couple of times. It's a blog people, quit getting your panties so bunched up. I find it absurd to think that because we belong to a fan-based music website that everyone in the world has to conform to our opinions of something so subjective as music.

Every band is open to criticism but her list seemed slightly forced and she came across as someone who just likes to whine and moan.

Even fans of the band find reason to complain from time to time. Obviously the word "hate" is a bit strong but if I had to come up with a list of things that irk me about the band, it would look something like this:

10. Recent Videos: Older videos featured all the members of the band but the last couple only have Gord. Bring back Paul and the rest of the boys.

9. In Violet Light: Despite great songs like Dire Wolf and Good Life, I think this is the Hip's weakest album. It's ashame they didn't include tracks like Problem Bear, Ultra Mundane and Forest Edge.

8. Robbie Baker's Wardrobe: The band's attire is fairly casual but Mr. Baker has made many questionably choices over the years including some very tight, very bright pants.

7. Merchandise: I've often thought about getting a T-shirt or jersey but I've never been impressed with their selection.

6. Recent Setlists: I hate how predictable the setlists have gotten. Chances of hearing any of those rare gems from Music at Work or IBE are very slim.

5. Yer Favourites: I think Vaccination Scar got a free ride because IBE was still so fresh and I also question The Darkest One. ( see point #9 )

4. Music @ Work Album Cover: Makes me cringe every time.

3. Johnny Fay: Although not a great drummer, his style works well with the band. My problem is that he comes off like a real jerk. From what i've read and from my own personal experience, he has the least appealing personality in the band.

I agree with all four of these. Get rid of Are You Ready, Use it Up, and Throwing off Glass, and replace them with Ultra Mundane, Forest Edge, and Problem Bears, and you've got yourself a fantastic album. As for the fans, I definitely prefer seeing the band in the U.S. these days, as the American fans I've met at these shows tend to be much more relaxed and laid back than their Canadian counterparts. Hell, even the Canadians are way more fun at these shows.

It's basically a greatest hits show everytime I see them now, with the exception of the World Container warm-up gigs in November of '06. They really mixed it up during those shows, and it was really refreshing. I wish they'd do more of that kind of stuff.

10 things I LOVE about the Hip:

1. Regardless of my feelings about their recent setlists, they're still the best live band on the planet.
2. Gord's brilliant lyrics
3. Robby's smooth and soulful lead guitar work
4. Nautical Disaster. Quite possibly the greatest rock song ever written.
5. The thundering rhythm section of Johnny and Gord S.
6. Paul's background vocals and kick-ass rhythm guitar playing. To quote Davd Bidini: "Langlois' playing is resolute; he marks his chords like a strongman hammering nails into hardwood."
7. They're all super nice guys and they always make time to chat with their fans. A few people have mentioned that Johnny is a bit of a jerk, but I met him once and I though he was very cool.
8. Their tireless charity work
9. The fact that they've managed to stay together and remain relevant and timeless over the course of their 20-plus year career, while other bands from the Hip's generation have long since broken up or disappeared.
10. Gord's crazy stage antics. The guy is arguably the most unique and entertaining frontman in rock.

No offense taken. I made my comment as both a drummer and crazed fanboy. I often enjoy playing along with entire Hip albums but I rarely find the drumming challenging or inventive.

If you feel Johnny Fay falls in the category of great drummers then I respect your opinion. I am far from a great drummer so perhaps as my skill and ability improve, my opinion of Johnny will change.

Darkest One is an awesome song. One of the best on IVL... and it has an awesome video to go along with it!
