The end is actually pretty funny: He loves "In View" but hates The Hip.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://songs-k.blogspot.com/2008/08/10-things-i-hate-about-hip.html">http://songs-k.blogspot.com/2008/08/10- ... t-hip.html</a><!-- m -->

"I hate how they're a ubiquitous radio presence, lauded by every Canadian jockey.
I hate the singer's voice.
I hate that they sing about hockey.
I hate how nobody in the States knows who they are, so none of my friends understand when I complain.
I hate how people just call them "The Hip."
It drives me freakin' insane.
I hate how every pasty white Canadian thinks this band is God,
a rock 'n' roll deity fit to exalt.
I hate how they make guest appearances on crappy Canadian sit-coms.
I hate how they win Junos by default.
I hate that they're on the soundtrack to every low-budget Canadian film,
hear them as the credits fall.
But mostly I hate the way I don't hate "In View."
Not even close. Not even a little bit. Not even at all.

[Exposes self to David Leisure]
[Runs out of classroom sobbing]

Could a better, catchier, poppy-yet-earnest-ier song have been written? Nope. Not up here in the Great White, anyway. "In View," from their 2006 World Container release, says everything while saying nothing, exudes feel-goodiness while simultaneously hinting at remorse, and clocks in at four minutes when it only seems like two. Excellent.

Does this finally make the Tragically Hip a-okay with me? NO. I revile them even more for clouding my good/bad judgements. Life is much easier to deal with when it's one-dimensional, and I don't need aging alterna-rock hosers mucking everything up."

Hating the Hip but loving In View is why I hate In View.

I hate how "white" is becoming a synonym for lame or uncool, and particularly the way that the people who use it that way are so often (as in this case) white.

She even wrote a fiction piece about The Hip: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://bipedalinfive.wordpress.com/2007/07/21/tragic-yes-hip-no/">http://bipedalinfive.wordpress.com/2007 ... es-hip-no/</a><!-- m -->

TRAGIC? YES. HIP? NO.

Good time. Good time. Making good time.
One-hundred kilometers per hour is pretty slow (what is that? Like, sixty?) but highway traffic was flowing at 130.
Don’t pay attention to the speed limit signs. Draft anyone with Ontario plates. New York state will be here soon enough.

The border guard/patrol/whatever was easy enough to deal with. Just passing through, you said. Takin’ a shortcut to Buffalo, you said. I’ll only be staying for the few hours it takes to clip Southern Ontario, you said.
Who’s in Buffalo, he asked.
My parents, you said. They just moved there. I’m visiting.
Where are you driving from, he asked. What was this? Light conversation?
Iowa, you said. Iowa is Native American for sudden and complete disinterest.
Go ahead, he said.

Why did they have to move so far east? And so far north? And to Buffalo? There are thousands of better cities to retire to. Probably 49 better states. But they never gave a satisfactory answer.
Visit us, they said. We miss you.
Well, I finally took a week off. I was going to spend it in Florida — I’ve got friends on the Gulf, y’know — but whatever. Here I come.

First impression of Canada: the air is at a very good temperature. It’s the middle of an August night, and the cool wind whipping through the window, cracked open just-so, feels nice on a face that’s been squinting through the windshield for fifteen consecutive hours.
Second impression: kilometers are hard to deal with.
Third impression: very few billboards litter the highway. There’s one here and there, but most of the signage is reserved for mile-markers (kilo-markers?) and infrequent, uninteresting points of interest.

…Crap, the Detroit station just fizzed out. Right in the middle of Zeppelin.
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“–listening to the best modern rock, on FM96.”
Okay.
“CFPL, 95.9, London”
Yeah, yeah, top of the hour ID. Play a song, please.
“Hey, how are you! Hope you’re having a great evening.”
The greatest.
“I’ve got a new one from the Tragically Hip!”
The… what? A new band?
“It’s called Yer Not the Ocean, and you’re hearing it right here on FM96.”
He said yer and you’re differently. Odd Canadian grammatical rules?

Yikes. Another Tim Hortons. They appear more frequently further into the interior. There’s something unsettling about…

…This song is terrible. This Tragically Hip song. Only thirty seconds in and it’s already unbearable. Warbly-voiced inaneness. Dumb guitars. This sucks.
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“–on 102.3, BOB FM.”
This radio station is apparently named Bob. At least they’re diving right into the music.

Will Canadian convenient stores take American cash? American credit cards? There were currency booths at the border, but…

…Wait, this is the same band. This is the Tragically Hip again. Different song. Lamer song. But the same band. Same pansy voice. Same guitars. Just a different rhythm. Are they actually really popular up here? Maybe listening to the entire song will reveal something.

[Four minutes, twenty seconds pass]

Well that was garbage.
“You’re listening to a Two-fer (T-T-Two-fer) weekend, on BOB FM.”
Okay. One more chance. One more Tragically Hip song. Then no more.

[Three minutes, forty-eight seconds pass]

Canada’s answer to underwhelming music.

…A billboard. Again they’re rare, so one really stands out. It’s an odd sensation to seek out enourmous advertisements when in the States they’re mentally blocked, invisible by overexposure. Here, this one says Classic Rock, 103.9, The Hawk.
Quick dial turn. 103.3, 103.5, 103.7…
“–home for classic rock, 103.9, The Hawk.”
So what’s Canadian classic rock? There’s Neil Young. The Guess Who. Is that all? The Band.

Apparently there are Canadian content laws. This was seen in a communications textbook sometime back in school. A certain percentage of the on-air music must be of Canadian origin. Somehow this preserves Canadian culture. But there are disadvantages to this law…

This is insane. It’s the Hip, the DJ said. Warbly voice. Drab guitars. It’s them. From a different era, but it’s them.
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“…You are ahead by a century…” No. Impossible.
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“…It was in Bobcaygeon, I saw the constellation…” That’s not even a word. But they can’t be –
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“…Colonol Tom, what’s wrong? What’s going on?…”
– on every –
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“…Wheat kings and pretty things…”
– freaking –
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
“…Okay, you made me scared…”
– station –
Scan. Scanning, scanning.
Scanning. Scanning.

“Iowa plates, I don’t know how long it’s been sitting down there. Down in that ravine, you can’t see it from the highway.” The first officer pressed himself against the guardrail away from the screaming semis and squinted in the noon sunlight. The second officer was still easing himself out of the patrol car. He didn’t hear what the first one said.
“What did you say?” Somebody had called-in a vehicle found off the highway. They’d have to assess the situation before a tow-truck could be called, and dang it! he was always getting caught in his own seat belt.
“I can just barely see it from here,” said the first. “It’s stuck face down in some water. I can’t tell if anybody’s inside. Are you still trying to get out of the car?”
“I can’t hear you.”
As the second freed himself and perched alongside his partner the traffic briefly cleared. For a few seconds there was only the sound of chirping birds, rustling tree limbs, and faint music from down below.
“Radio still works, eh?” Both officers adjusted their belts. It was going to be a slippery climb.”
“It’s the Hip. Escape is at Hand for the Travelin’ Man. I love that song.”

Hasn't it been that way for a long time? Particularly in North America, where the expression 'white bread' was adopted to refer to the 'bland' and 'uninteresting' white, predominantly suburban, middle class culture? Oxford claims the term came into use in the 80s, when it began to appear in print in earnest. Oxford notes that its usage is limited to North America, pretty much.

Agreed, but more prevalent recently. Publication of two silly books this summer, for example, one being Stuff White People Like. (From which I gather that all white people are urban yuppies.)

It has become newly fashionable for white people to show how hip they are by deriding white people, it seems to me.

She's an American - all Americans are dumb.

Quoting the movie 10 things I hate about you at the end was a nice touch.

Re: Recent Blog Topic: "10 Things I Hate About The Hip" - direwolf74 - 08-27-2008

The Hip aren't everybody's cup of tea, but this girl's hatred of the band is bordering on obsession. I hate Nickelback, but I don't write lengthy diatribes about how much I hate them.

So true she is obsessed...Worse than all of us but I guess in a bad way...She is just trying to deny her love of them and will be out of the closet soon when she is sick of listening to Britney Spears and the Jonas Brothers Tongue

Bianca rifles through Kat’s drawers while Cameron watches with notable interest.

BIANCA
Okay, here we go.

As she names off pertinent discoveries, she hands them to Cameron.

BIANCA
(continuing)
Class schedule, reading list, date book,
coffee tickets, um, concert tickets.
Ah ha! Black panties!

CAMERON
What does that tell us?

BIANCA
She wants to have sex some day, that’s what.

CAMERON
(flustered by this intimate detail)
She could just like the color...

BIANCA
You don’t buy black lingerie unless you want
someone to see it.

CAMERON
(perhaps encouraged by this development)
Oh. So, uh, can I see your room?

Honestly, I have no problem with this entry. It's one of the more articulated anti-Hip tirades I've heard. And I think I can speak for most of us when I say, I've heard a lot of them.

Cheers,

Pat

Pleeeeese, give me a break. Why do you have to stir the pot with the American crap? Just because she has an opinon doesn't mean she is dumb. Unfortunately she gets to print what she writes and we all get bent about it. I kind of agree with her on "Ocean" but she shouldn't be dissing Wheat Kings or Bobcaygon. :rambo:

I think that Tthip (an American) needed a sarcasm emoticon.

Oops - sorry spottrax.
I did not notice when Hipbase went to the new design recently that it took away our country flags from our avatar sidebar.
If it was still there you would see my American flag, and see the sarcasm.
