I play in a cover band because I like playing and singing.
Period.
I have original material but the % of an artist making it is 0.000000156.
Not good odds.
I have my own business and music is my hobby.
Covering the Hip is fun stuff and "keeps things real".

Second best? Please. As Phantom51 said, the second best is to just listen to them on CD. I really don't like covers unless they're being played by a band I like. Now, imagine NOTHING BUT COVERS from a band I don't like (i.e., all cover bands). Cover bands are a way for musicians to whore themselves out for money and tribute bands are a sign of lack of creativity.

I think that, since I am literary prostitute who quotes others instead of writing my own arguments, I will let the late, great Charles Bukowski bring my point home; just switch out the literary references with musical ones.
