I agree that Nautical should be "hoisted into the rafters". I think the reason it wins as the best song is because of it's pureness. I once saw Arlo Guthry and Pete Seger at the Melody Fair theater in Niagara Falls New York. Arlo said that writing a great song was like standing in the stream of the collective consciousness, pulling songs out like fish. He said that he often looked at Bob Dylan and thought to himself that "I" should of written that song. Arlo said Bob was standing a little further upstream from him snagging songs. I think Nautical comes from that stream. Sure we have songs we might prefer to listen to but a great song is a rare fish. Nautical Disaster is the Right Whale of the Tragically Hips catch.

The Horrible Esthete Wrote:To add to what TDC said, I think (based on overall merit) Nautical is in the bottom half of the DFN collection [Grace, Thugs, Yawning or Snarling, So Hard Done By, Terrarium, IOD, Scared > Nautical].

JMO.

Confusedhock:

I don't think any of these songs come close in terms of lyrical content and the musical build-up fitting like a glove to those lyrics. I think Nautical also has the best extended metaphor of any Hip song. I love the fact that it doesn't have a chorus and reads like a story. The vocals fit Gord's vocal range about as well as any song (with maybe the exception of Springtime in Vienna).

But everyone's certainly entitled to their opinion :thumb:
