Well done Nautical, a slight outsider but a deserving champ!

Slight outsider? How so? It's been chosen as top song in every 'what's your fav song' poll ever done on this site.

I honestly thought 'Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man' would win.

I thought Grace "deserved" to win (As ridiculous as that sounds) but after you get a look at the sweet songs Nautical had to beat out, well then, yeah, Nautical, a deserved gold medal around its wet, thrashing neck...

going into this most people (myself most certainly included) seemed to have NOIS pegged as the hands-down winner.

I think we all knew Nautical would be up near the top, but not necessarily number one. (To use a soccer analogy, NOIS was the Brazil, the one everyone expected to win without even looking at the matchups, whereas Nautical was the Italy, when you looked at it properly it had all the ingredients to take the gold - popularity, pedigree etc...)

Where do you get that from? Most people predicted Nautical as the winner, and as already stated, it's been the overall choice of this board for as long as I can remember.. it's no surprise whatsoever it won. I'd go so far as to say it was give-in it would win, it's won every previous poll through the years so one can easily assume it'd win this one, which it has. It was the odds-on favourite, certainly not an 'outsider'.

In the 'early predictions' thread, someone even replied with Nautical when you said NOIS couldn't be matched.

If this was open to the general public (on thehip.com or something), then I would expect NOIS might win. But I never had any doubt about Nautical winning here, though Grace did give it a run for it's money.

I agree with those who've suggested that perhaps Nautical should be retired as champion from future competition, or at least set aside for some future 'champion of champions' type event. Take a look at the songs it faced this time. There isn't a lightweight in the bunch, and Nautical destroyed all of them except for Grace. If it stays in, it will win every time. I know I would never vote against it.

IMO it was definitely the George Mason of this final four

Apologies for the gibberish I posted last night (especially that atrocious soccer analogy) I had been out on the wine after work before I came home and posted... it would appear that in my fairly blotto state I misread the early predictions thread and added most of the people who were pointing out that Nautical would win to those of us who said that NOIS would be up there... the moral of this story, I shall have to put a * this post has been made under the influence of alcohol disclaimer under future posts.

Apologies for wasting your time there guys, I'm an ass!

On a side note though, I'm really glad Nautical won, it's been a real 'grower' in my first year listening to The Hip!

Although I voted everyday I was able to get on a computer and access the site I surmised from Day 1 that Nautical Disaster would be crowned the Winner. Nautical is the one song you never hear people nit-picking on this board (Grace might be another). I’m a big fan but it’s not even in my Top 10.

I think the Nautical banner should be hoisted into the rafters and retired from future competition.

DFN and this song are OVERRATED...oh ya, it's true, it's daaaaaaaaaamn true...sorry to burst any bubbles, but it had to be said...seriously, it's like, Gord at his whiniest...i still love it, but c'mon...Grace Too, Greasy Jungle, Fire In The Hole, Scared, IOD,...god, almost the entire rest of the album is actually better...not to mention the rest of the catalogue...to put in perspective, it's not even the best song they've ever played on SNL Tongue...

in closing, stop being so boring and predictable hipbase...if you need help with that, you need look no further than your favourite band, they switch it up and stay fresh with the best of em Wink.

C'mon, TDC. Pretty much every song on DFN better than Nautical? C'mon! The climactic outro, the vivid lyrics, SUSAN! Jodie Foster for crying out loud!

I dunno about that.

Nautical v. Grace was the heavyweight bout of the whole "tourney" and it began on a Saturday night. Not great timing for the colossal event, imo. Needless to say, I wasn't on a computer anytime from Saturday night through Sunday, and thus didn't vote; if I had, I would surely have voted for Grace.

Nautical won fair & square, but my point is that this matchup could conceiveably could go the other way if you held it again at any random point in time. Just sayin'.

As a side commentary, I actually am surprised that Nautical is [apparently] so universally loved. I do like the song, but in my own personal rankings, it wouldn't even make the top 20. I voted for Pistols & Locked over Nautical, and can reel off another 20 songs I like better.

To add to what TDC said, I think (based on overall merit) Nautical is in the bottom half of the DFN collection [Grace, Thugs, Yawning or Snarling, So Hard Done By, Terrarium, IOD, Scared > Nautical].
