I think it was during the Phantom Power tour in the U.S., a music writer asked Gord his thoughts on being the "Pearl Jam of Canada". Gord's response:
"I thought Pearl Jam was the Pearl Jam of Canada. Does that make them the Tragically Hip of America?"
