The reactions from people when they experience Gord live for the first time are always pretty funny. At the Sasquatch show we met a lot of Americans who had heard of the band and knew of their reputation in Canada, but had never seen them live. The reactions to the Hip's performance ranged from "wow, that dude is amazing" to "I don't know what's goin on with that lead singer, but I think he's on cocaine." Very funny stuff. Not everybody liked them though. One girl was so unimpressed with the band, she refered to them as "boring garage rock with a drunken middle-aged man for a lead singer", and said that they were the worst band of the day. Ouch! I was a bit surprised by her reaction, considering it was probably the greatest Hip performance I'd ever seen. Just goes to show ya, the Hip aren't for everybody and they're definitely an acquired taste. Either you get them, or you don't. Funny thing is that she was mainly there to see the Shins, who I thought were terrible. Different strokes for different folks I guess. The Shins had the misfortune of having to go on after the Hip, and in my opinion were totally upstaged by the boys from Kingston.
