Very different indeed. If you played Pretend to the Hip in 1987 and told them it was a glimpse 20 years into their future, I wonder how they would have reacted. Disgust? Disappointment? Worried that they were going to evolve from a bar band straight into a lounge act? Similarly, I wonder how the Hip of 2006 would have reacted to hearing Werewolf again for the first time in years. Would it also have been with disgust? Or would it have been more of a reaction of amusement?
The EP is very amateurish, no bones about it, but I never really understood the bands hatred of it and how they seemed to want to distance themselves from it. I know Gord D didn't write the songs, but there a still a few quality tracks on there. Well "quality" when you take into account they were a fresh new band anyways, definitely stronger than some other first albums released.
I would have loved to have heard Highway Girl, Last Canadian Exit, or Small Town Bringdown live over the years.
