I interpreted Gord phrasing that their would be an on stage "struggle" as a positive thing.
I remember a Jack white interview where he said something similar, like; I strive for a struggle on stage, the easy way out is never fun, a struggle demands spontaneity, that's why I play out of tune sometimes or place my other instruments in tough to reach places.
