My take on this may sound strange but I've always pictured this as the tale of a really geeky, perpetual loser type guy trying to hook up with an equally unlucky female. To me he is a kind of balding middle-aged salesman and she is the "thrice-devoriced, 40ish still trying to hang on to twenty" type. She is in the bar hoping like mad to meet "Mr. Right" and he doesn't look forward to the prospect of going back to the hotel room alone. He doesn't care if he's Mr. Right, as long as he's "Mr. Right Now". This may be her first date since the last "Mr. Right" went back inside for a parole violation.
He is so desperate that he will try anything, including telling her he is rich and very good at what needs to be done. Maybe he tries to convince her he is an important guy. Connected somehow. She looks around trying to see if she is missing out on something/someone, but decides "what the Hell".
The secret rules of engagement are the lies these two are filling themselves with while trying to make something low-rate seem somewhat less smarmy. In the end they both take away from the experience what they can.
This is just the vision that comes to my head but it does make a good outline for a sad story. Titled "Saturday Night at the #9 Legion..." , perhaps.
