Do bands usually play a full set?
Will there only be the $15 weekend fee to see the show?
How great a view can you expect/how can you weasel your way to a better one?

Usually, the sets are 60-90 minutes long, sometimes more because I believe they start kicking everyone out at midnight. It will be 15 bucks to see the weekend show; Summerfest does do free admission promotions on every day of the festival, but it is good only during a certain time of day (generally noon to 4 pm, but you could get your hand stamped, leave and get readmitted later in the evening w/handstamp) but it looks like the only admission promotion for the 2nd is for members of H.O.G. (Harley-Davidson Owners Group). Here's the link to better explain it : http://www.summerfest.com/summerfestinf ... otions.htm
As to the view, the best bet is to get there early because the seating is general admission floor. Generally speaking, the crowd starts filling in around the 8 pm show and gets worse and worse as the 10 pm headliner show approaches. The seating is just plain old metal benches and people tend to stand on them while the music is playing. Sometimes you can weasel your way to a better spot if you spot an empty space but you have to pray that the people in front of you arent taller than you are. During my time in Milwaukee, I rarely heard the local radio promote or play the Hip, but it'll be a sure bet that they'll promote the ever living daylights out of Soul Asylum's appearance. Sad to say, Summerfest organizers tend to go for bands with good radio appeal as headliners; although they do get a great number of eclectic and interesting bands for the 6 pm and 8 pm time slots.
