So what's your issue, their speech or the song itself?

I don't care one way or the other about their speech. Although we had the TV on, I was somewhat distracted for most of the Oscars, so I really didn't listen to it. Even believeing that it was classless, what does that have to do with the song winning the award? The only thing it would indicate to me is that the artist may be lacking in social etiquette(sp?) skills.

Putting aside the fact that the song won(we all know the oscars aren't always just), three 6 mafia had no class at the occasion. They had been told to clean up the song for the broadcast and they had agreed to it.

Is there a rule that all songs must be "serious" or memorable? C'mon -- don't take music so seriously.

No, there isn't such a requirement.

But nobody's talking about "all songs." They're talking about the criteria for winning an award. Generally, most would agree that the Oscars should be going to things that stand the test of time.

Me, I'd say that they're just marketing nonsense, which is why I don't have a horse in this race ... but then, I don't take the Oscars seriously. If I took the Oscars seriously, then I'd tend to agree that the winners should be likely to stand the test of time.

What I believe should be the criteria for a song to win an Oscar, an Oscar being awarded for acheivement in film, is that the song should help to advance the story being told and illustrate the tone of the film. For Hustle and Flow to have a song that was eloquently written would not have suited the film. I loved Crash, I thought it deserved to win almost everything that it was nominated for, but the song didn't stick out for me. The only reason why I watched Hustle and Flow was because I had heard how brilliant the performances were, and I discovered that it was a well made film, and I recommend it to anyone.
As for the acceptance speech, I didn't watch it so I cannot give an opinion on that.

So, anyone listening to the Evita soundtrack now? "you must love me" won best song in 1996.
