Some songs define bands. They are the perfect meshing of the various talents and tastes within the group, and they are the ones that everyone, even those who aren't fans of the band, know. Without doubt the songs that define the Hip are Blow and NOIS. Its the same with Zeppelin and Rock'n'Roll, Bryan Adams and Summer of '69 and Matthew Good Band and Time Bomb.
Having said that, is it possible for a band to play a show without their big tunes? Sure, the atmosphere is there, all the mad fans are going crazy, but you know that when NOIS or Blow begins to play that everyone in the stadium, field or bar is on their feet and singing along.

This debate has been going on for years now. I understand they're the fan favorites and all, but just for one tour I'd love to see them take these songs out of the setlist and play some lesser-known gems in their place. Blow still has plenty of energy on a good night, but as a fan I've completely lost interest in NOIS. Sadly it's become my "go get a beer and pee" song. Unless they start jamming out the middle section again, I have no interest in hearing it live anymore. After witnessing so many mind-blowing performances of it in the past, the album version just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe they could just cut down the amount of times they're played and pull them out for every second or third show.

(Problem Bear subtly backs toward exit)
I'd be fine without them. In fact, I've (Problem Bear takes a deep breath) never cared for Blow at High Dough.
(Problem Bear runs for his life)
P.S. Nor Courage.

"you might as well have just smashed the keyboard with your fists and made gibbersh phrases for as much sense as that makes to me. sod;h;wuoqw[ eoij wejioqdfo inwf oin p]wdioqfn ndsfadsfsdf. amen. "
What can I say? On this forum, it's like admitting that you don't like sex, I know, but, with the exception of the nifty intro, Blow just doesn't do much for me. I don't think it's a bad song, I just don't feel anything when it comes on.
Two caveats:
1) I joined the Hip Brigade at Fully Completely so, though Up to Here and Road Apples rock, they have no emotional resonance for me. They're more like learning what your parents were like before you were born.
2) I'm one of those fans who would much rather listen to Leave and The Dire Wolf than On the Verge or Twist my Arm.
That said, I realize that my offense is dire and I will accept my excommunication from the order.
Cheers,
John
