"Pretend" and assorted other new songs
#16

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I thought that the melody for the verses of 'Try' was very similar to that of 'Boy Bruised By Butterfly Chase.' And its musical backdrop seemed to grow organically out of Meridian, the song that preceded it in the Commodore set. So it seems to be a fusion of 'Butterfly' and 100th Meridian - sort of fragile solo Gord meets mighty Hip machine.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

'Rink' was my favourite (although I heard it as 'The Lonely End of the Lake' - obviously incorrect, but I think that would also have been awesome). It seemed to throw this very elegant bridge at you in the middle of a pretty balls-to-the-wall Hip tune.

I think the band is in the midst of a really smokin' period: first IBE then 'No Threat' and now a trio of what sound like sure-fire tunes off the forthcoming CD...man, that's all good shit. :thumb: Too bad nobody outside of Hipdom is liable to notice.

I believe the fifth new song that the Hip have played live is "Oceans", as stated on the setlist for the second show at Fort York. "Oceans" however, may only be the abbreviated title of the song, as most Hip songs on the setlist are written down as shortened codenames for the tunes.

The setlist on thehip.com says "Oceans".

They can call it whatever they want. "Oceans" sounded very much like a radio hit to me. Another great new Hip tune!

Shane Kroeker...
"Oceans" is the 5th new song that the Hip have played live. The one you are forgetting is most likely "Pretend". Though I was not present during the preformance of it, all i have heard about it is that it is an acoustic song. The other 3 new Hip song of course being "Lonely End Of The Rink" "Try" and "The Drop Off"

I have a setlist from the Belleville show and it's listed as Fly. Who knows what they'll end up calling it.

Yeah and it also said on the setlist (physical written one) from Fort York #2 that 38 Years Old was just "38." The band always puts short forms down so it is quite possible that Ocean or "Oceans" will have a longer title. For instance, I think (if memory serves me correctly) the chorus went something like "You are not a Lake, you are an ocean."

Nonetheless, definitely my pick for the first single of the four songs that I have heard so far. Rink is close behind followed by Drop Off then Try (of Fly). I still can't believe that even though all the information told us they wouldn't be playing any more new songs because the label didn't want them to, that we still got another one played. Good stuff boys! :jump :jump

Here are the new songs thus far:
1) Pretend
2) The Lonely End Of The Rink
3) The Drop-Off
4) Fly
5) Oceans
6) In View - The alleged first single off the new album "World Container".
*Note they have not played this song live as of yet, but MAv. says "The first single kicks ass!"

So It seems that we have heard 6 new songs that may or may not appear on the new album. If they do all appear on World Container, then we will have knowlegde of approximately half of the songs on the new album.

World Container Track Listing:
1. Yer Not The Ocean
2. The Lonely End Of The Rink
3. In View
4. Fly
5. Luv(sic)
6. The Kids Don't Get it
7. Pretend
8. Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me
9. The Drop Off
10. Family Band
11. World Container
So there it is. All of 6 of the summer fing songs made it onto the disc, along with 5 other unheard tracks. This all looks very promising! The Track listing also clears up the name titles of "Fly", and "Yer Not The Ocean".

To any and all "You're/Your" Police out there (and I'm one) ... does it just kill you that the Hip use "Yer" interchangeably ... Yer [You're] not the Ocean vs. Yer [Your] Favourites?

just checking.
