I'm surprised he's only been mentioned a couple of times.
To my generation, the quintessential front man was,
is, and always will be the incomparable Freddie Mercury.
If you're in doubt, check out the original Live Aid or Queen at Wembley DVDs.
edit:
Of course, Gord is the
second greatest front man in rock & roll.

Elton John?! Sorry, he just kindof bores me to watch live. I mean, he's sitting down for one thing. Bono, to me, is a successful pop artist who's made a career out of non-threatening, middle of the road music that just doesn't suck me in live. I mean, the Hip might not be Slipknot-heavy either, but Gord's lyrics require more thought, and are more poetic, and the guys are way better musicians.
Obviously that's just one man's oppinion. Scott Weiland is indeed great, but if you caught him on an off night, back in his not-so-distant druggy days you could be in for a big disapointment. Ian Astbury is frickin' awesome!
However, in my view Neil Fallon from Clutch is the only frontman currently touring who comes close to Gord's intensity and creativity in my oppinion. The thing I find interesting about that is that Fallon has made a career of holding the mike in his hands, hunched over it dramatically, while Gord actually uses the mike stand to his advantage instead of treating it as an obstacle.

Clutch are really really good, I'd love to see them live...
you can't be dissing Elton John though, he's phenomanal! one of the best voices in the modern history of popular music, and he's a helluva pianist...(insert joke here:....i said insert joke, NOT THAT! AHHHHHHH!)
also, the man is a legendary showman-extrordinaire! up there with the likes of Mercury, Elvis, Bowie, Cooper, Jagger, Hendrix, and all of the other greats...
