I guess I'd add that Alfredsson is no Sather...he didn't guarantee that the Senators would win the Cup last year. Everybody misinterpreted that...the original complete quote makes it very clear he just meant the Sens theoretically have what it takes to win. He guaranteed that, with its present makeup, the Sens would win the Cup sooner rather than later.

I'm not without a sense of humour, though...I winced whe I heard hm say that because I knew what it would sound like to most people!

I got a kick out of his playoff guarantees. Like when he guaranteed the Leafs wouldn't shut them out three games in a row (true), and when he guaranteed after Game 5 that they'd win the series (not true). I was curious to see what his guarantees were going to be this season - I figured he'd scale them down to: "I guarantee I'll wake up before noon every day this week" and "I guarantee I'll have dinner most nights".

Goodenow looked downright like a politician! All those evasive answers...it's too bad he had to follow Bettman because, even though I saw only the highlights, he did a wonderful job. Very approachable, very honest "seeming"...whereas Goodenow seemed like a shifty lawyer.

I wish I had been Peter Mansbridge last night. Some points/question I would have had:

(1) You say you want a free market system. What free market system in the world includes a minimum salary and guaranteed contracts, not to mention minimum salary increases of 10%?
(2) Ticket prices have nothing to do with player salaries? C'mon.
(3) Players don't have time to prepare for a post-hockey career because hockey is a 365 day a year job, once you take training into account? Ummm, what player trains 12 hours a day? Seems to me that there is a lot of time to train AND take courses during the offseason. They seem to have plenty of time available for golfing.
(4) You can't find one single NFL player who is happy with their CBA? Huh? Have you talked to Eli Manning and his $20 million signing bonus?

I hope they lock the bastards out for two years. It's a sad, sad world when Rick Vaive is a voice of sanity.
