We Are The Same only played once during the tour.

I really wanted to hear the M@W set in Ottawa, on account of (I thought at the time) Toronto #4 being the only one of any of the '2000s' songs I had never seen live. When they did the IBE set, I'd realized I'd *also* never seen 'if new orleans is beat', and given how great summer is killing us and Gus were....I was more than satisfied. Still, 16 years since I've seen lake fever. That is such a tune.

I'm just putting that down and slowly backing away.

I thought the same thing, actually. As great as the Kingston show was, it would have been a good venue to showcase some of their more recent stuff. Sloan did a good job of that on their current tour for the OCTA re-issue, and it made me buy a couple of more recent CDs at the show I attended.

Nevertheless, it's pretty awesome when a band has so much great material that your biggest complaint is that they didn't play enough of it. And, fwiw, there was a huge drop in energy every time that they played the new record, and more recent stuff. That's not an excuse for them not to play the newer songs, but simply a fact. I thought they did a good job overall of representing their entire catalogue, and had the tour been longer, I'm sure we would have seen more appearances from IVL, WATS, NFPA, etc. At the end of the day, I'm pretty pumped about this past tour; leave it to the Hip to leave me wanting more!

My Music at Work, Its a Good Life, Gus, In View, Love is a First and Man Machine Poem. I'm not sure they needed 4 songs off M@W. I wouldn't say Toronto #4 and Putting Down are essential tracks by any means.

I think part of the energy drop was due to the crowd this tour brought out. There were lots of people at these shows who haven't seen a show/bought an album since the PP/M@W days so they are not familiar with the material. Whereas during these albums tours, (post 2000), they were more familiar with the songs/knew them/liked them/loved them.

That's a great point. I agree. Even in Hamilton a lot of people didn't even know Eldorado and they played that song at every single show last tour.

Despite a handful of excellent songs (Morning Moon, Last Recluse, Depression Suite, Country Day), I think WATS is their weakest album not counting the EP. I know some people like it, but it just never did it for me. I listened to it again recently just to try and give it another shot, and I still had the same reaction to it. I remember being relieved when I first heard NFPA, which I thought was a solid return to form at the time.

I really enjoyed WAtS when it first came out, but I don't think it has held up while. It was mostly just refreshing to me after WC, which easily remains as my least favourite Hip album. Still, I'm surprised WAtS didn't get a 2nd set this tour, when IBE had 3.

I have to agree with the above. Both shows I went to, most people I talked to said that hadn't been to any shows since the 90s. They stayed standing, but didn't seem to know any of the songs during the post-PP sets.

At both the CGY shows they played WC and IVL of the post PP era, but the difference between the two mini sets and the crowd reaction to them was remarkably.

Both were from the later era and not as well known

But

In View
Kids
WC
Ocean

just has so much more juice than

Use It Up
IAGLIFYDW
Glass
Dire Wolf

I'm not saying they are better songs but I think you could tell which ones you'd be more receptive to if they were unknown to you.

And when you look at the WATS most of the good songs just don't swing (the best songs on there IMHO are MM, Country Day, Depression Suite, Furrows)

P.S.
I never really got Kids until I seen it live, i was liked it ok, but live its a whole nother animal, great tune.

I was at their warm up show in Peterborough for the Bobcaygeon concert in 2011. Kids was the only non-greatest hit they played and it was the highlight of the show for me. Sadly, it was the one song that got cut from the set list for Bobcaygeon a couple days later. Love that tune! I'll be the antlers...and I'll be the elk...
