One problem I see with a simple fee to join a club is that scalpers will gladly pay it to reap the benefits of presales. Some scalpers might go to the trouble buy a cd, but I think it reduces the chances. I know that personally when I've scored some good tickets its awesome, and the few times I missed out on presales I wasn't too disappointed. But if I paid to enjoy those presales and missed out because some scalper bought 100 memberships so he could sell tix for $500+ on ebay I would be pissed. I think something like this happened to U2 when they created their paid membership club.
I was in line for the surprise Massey Hall show just after M@W and the only guys in front of me were some homeless dudes obviously paid by scalpers. We waited all night and when they finally opened the box office the security guy asked hip trivia ?'s. Real easy, like "whats the name of their latest album?" None of these guys knew the answers so they got booted.
Hey I was about 10 people from the front of the line for that show, i totally remember that. They kept changing people in and out of the front of the line too as I do recall.
