Double-disc Greatest Hits?
#31

I think they'd better make it a 4-disc set...
Just way to many good songs to cram on 2 CDs. Throw in a DVD and some kind of book (Gord's poetry / unreleased lyrics maybe?) and I'd shell out my hard earned cash.

I am trying to find out which concert will be shown in the dvd part of the package.....so far it's been to no avail....i am assuming the Toronto show.

For me that's good, cause i wasn't there.

I just heard on the edge that the hip went back into the studio to record some tracks for some purpose, and then they hypothesized a GH's cd soon

Yeah, better make it 4 cds... GH Vol. I and Vol II. I have remembered some other songs I love and had forgotten about when I posted my selections.. Opiated, Looking for a Place to Happen, Springtime in Vienna, Wheat Kings, Dire Wolf, On the Verge and Daredevil....

ok, there's a big difference between a "BEST OF" and a "GREATEST HITS".

to me, implying that something is the "BEST OF" means that the band has sat down, and hand picked one by one, all of the songs on the release, because they feel they are the songs that best represent what they're all about.

a "GREATEST HITS" should be comprised only of "HITS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tby that definition, nothing from the EP should appear on the release, because none of those songs were really big "hits" (also the band themselves don't seem to be too fond or proud of the ep, so i doubt anything from it will be included on the release, i like the ep though). IMO, only singles should be on a "Greatest Hits" disc, therefore it should look something like this:

Disc 1

1. Blow At High Dough
2. NOIS
3. Boots Or Hearts
4. 38 Years Old
5. Three Pistols
6. Twist My Arm
7. Little Bones
8. Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
9. Courage
10. Fully Completely
11. Fifty-Mission Cap
12. At The Hundredth Meridian
13. Greasy Jungle
14. Thugs
15. Grace Too
16. Nautical Disaster

with maybe "Looking For A Place To Happen", "Cordelia", "Scared", or "Double Suicide" making an appearance as a representitive of the lesser known tracks

Disc 2

1. Gift Shop
2. Springtime In Vienna
3. Ahead By A Century
4. 700 ft. Ceiling
5. Fireworks
6. Something On
7. Bobcaygeon
8. Poets
9. My Music @ Work
10. Lake Fever
11. Freak Turbulence
12. Silver Jet
13. The Darkest One
14. IAGLIYDW
15. It Can't Be Nashville Everynight
16. Vaccination Scar

with "Heaven Is A Better Place Today", "Summer Is Killing Us", "Silver Road" or "Black Day In July" rounding out the rest of the disc.

either way, i won't be buying it as i already own all of their albums and it would be a waste of my $, BUT, lots of people will buy this disc, because i know for a fact there are tons of people out there with one or two or maybe even a few of the hip's albums, that would love to get their hands on something like this, especially if it was a disc with all of their singles. like it or not, but that's what the majority of the people towards whom this disc would be marketed to want to hear, they want the songs they know and love from the radio or tv. anyway, that's my 2 cents, that took waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to post Sad.

I think TDC probably hit the playlist on the nose. It's a greatest hits compilation, and to my knowledge, The Hip have between 30 and 35 number one singles on Canadian radio (it's some useless knowledge I read a few years ago), and I would think what is listed above is fairly accurate to what those number one hits were...

I think, though, that Pigeon Camera and Cordelia were among them, so I'd replace Freak Turbulence and Something On with Pigeon Camera and Cordelia...

Since we're guessing at the set-list, I suppose we may as well guess at the sales... I think it will sell 600,000 records, debut at number one and remain there for four weeks... assuming, of course, that it is marketed properly, and as we have seen in the last 10 months, The Hip's promotion is more evident (Beer Cases and sitcoms), so I think this CD will be pushed down everyones throat, and it will sell a whole lot.

i think you gotta keep Freak Turbulence in there, M@W would only have 2 tracks if you took it out. I don't think i've ever heard Pidgeon Camera on commercial radio, i'm not sure about Cordelia (i think it deserves a spot though) either, but i know that Something On was a huuuuuuuuuuuuge hit, i mean , they even shot a video for it that spent a lot of time on the much charts, i think it's a keeper for sure. i still don't know when we're going to see this release though, if the boys are alledgedly writing new material for a whole new album, i don't see the need for the greatest hits disc just yet...

Are they writing for a new album or just recording new tracks? They could be recording a couple of new tracks for a GH disc, right? A GH (or best-of disc) doesn't mean they have to stop recording new albums. They could do the "1987 - 1994" thing if they wanted. Throw a couple of re-mastered B-sides on there... Then release a new studio album. Then in a year or two release a "1995 - 2005" deal.
I'm sure that won't happen, though. Just a thought.
