A buddy of mine, who has no taste in music, wrote a satirical critique of The Hip. He submitted that Gordie is the womanizer and constantly visiting prostitutes. He said that the bandmates confronted him on it and said they had it "Up To Here" hence the album. At this point he had just finished a trist with a baker's daughter - then writing the song Blow At High Dough. I thought that was funny and perhaps relevant to the topic.
I always thought Grace, Too was about some guy trying to get into a girl's pants and she was totally put off by him and hated the idea.

Secret rules of engagement ... nothing to do with marriage. Where do people get these ideas?
Rules of engagement: military term referring to orders governing how soldiers can respond to threats, circumstances under which force may be used, level of force that may be used, etc.
The rules of engagement are the rules governing the exchange between the two people in the song. They're "secret" because they're not really written down or acknowledged. We have only the appearance of conflict, because her response isn't "drop dead, skippy" (yes, I hear that a lot), but non-committal lip-gnawing. In short, the second verse essentially says that they're playing games, which is hard to endorse.

Haha. Well said Brazle. I know this guy quite well and it is all tongue in cheek. He actually doesn't like the Hip, but he has his own interesting way of conveying that to people. He's a good guy.
