I cross over a couple times a month. I went to Toronto twice a couple weeks ago...and crossed again last weekend to head into London. I live 5 minutes from the Peace Bridge.
They asked me for my driver's license all three times the last three times I went...but last weekend they also asked for my birth certificate...which was a first in ages that they have done that. They also asked for my resident card as well. They are getting tighter with security, and likely will as the elections draw near.

I cross the Peace Bridge 3x/week and live 2 minutes from the border here in Fort Erie. I have both US and Canadian citizenship.
I never have to show any ID coming back, but going over they always ask for ID. The best ID to have is a passport, as it shows citizenship + has a picture of yourself in it.
If you don't have a passport, then some form of documentation that shows your citizenship (birth certificate) and a valid photo ID (driver's license, student card) is needed.
Ever since 9/11, they have been far more strict with crossing the border.

When I visit Toronto every so often, they ask for either a passport or a birth certificate and driver's license for proof of US citizenship. My mom experiences the same thing when she crosses over for her yearly painting convention. Hope that helps
