Thoughts and Insights -- World Container

Fly just came on randomly.
How can I like and diskike a song so much?
Some great lines. Too poppy sounding.

I recently read 'We are the Next Us' for the first time in many years after it was quoted in a post. I had forgotten that the 'DarklyNurturedDream', 'ColderValues', and 'FeaturelessButFree' of 'Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me' were concert goers in their original poetic form.

"or go to a show - look down your row.
the lights are on - find people you know.
There’s AnthemSinger standing with his arm
around DarklyNurturedDream.
and Ol’Quintessential listening to HigherThanACBCGuest say;
“I haven’t read them, but I understand them.”
And there’s BrainOfAToaster (he knows when things are done)
next to that girl, CradlingHerKeyCard, whispering,
“this might be my last show, come.”
Check it out! There’s HoldStill and Gently - together again for the very first time.
and MyDoctrineHasFailedMeButMyMusicHasn’t
next to ColderValues, next to FeaturelessButFree.
Hey, even TheEmperorHasNoHook is here and IDon’tWannaTalkAboutItHowYouBrokeMyHeart, she’s here too."

It made me think that 'Last Night', in addition to describing a personal relationship, is also an expression of Gord's insecurities with the fleeting popularity of the band. "You" represents the Hip's diminished mid-2000's fan base and in this case it's a dream that has a strong basis in reality and keeps him up at night.

"Men were turning on their machines, making everything mean, Fires burned, cold values clashed" is a great depiction of the band plugging in and leaving it all on stage. However, this act itself no longer seems sufficient to sustain the relationship. Interestingly Gord doesn't undergo any self-examination but instead throws it back on the fan: "What's happening to you? Why don't you love me like you used to?"

I never thought of the song this way. This is really interesting interpretation. Really makes me look at "last night" a different way.

I was just gonna say the same thing.

This album will always hold a special place in my heart.
This is the album where they went on tour in little venues and would their first setlist would be the entire World Container album. Second setlist would be a mix of older hits and B sides from different albums. I went to four of these shows.

Seeing it live helped me appreciate the power and energy behind this album. It is best listened to live. Is it the best Hip album overall? No. But in terms of live music it is fantastic.
One of my favourite Hip memories.

Absolutely. I had strong feeling about what that song was about, but you've made me reinterpret things. LNIDYDLM* is such a cool song...and I don't care what the critics say, I love WC.

*so fun to type!

Same here -- I saw a number of shows in Canada and northeast US on this tour, and never this set up. Canada was still arenas, then in the US mid-sized theaters to larger clubs, with a more typical set list.

WATS tour was smaller venues, two sets with an acoustic portion, no opener so a longer set list and they pulled out some older material (but I never heard anything I would have called a B-side....in part because other than a few extra digital only tracks like Skeleton Park, Hush, etc. not sure there ever really was a B-side...)

The early tour at the end of 2006 was multi-night stands theatres and large clubs in Canada, where they would play most of world container each night, but never in sequence and certainly never "b-sides", so I have no idea where that came from. It *was* the first time they played fiddler's green, though.

The show I saw from montreal's setlist is a good example:

1. The lonely end of the rink
2. New Orleans is sinking
3. In view
4. Don't wake daddy
5. The drop off
6. Ahead by a century
7. Fly
8. Poets
9. Fiddler's green
10. World container
11. Luvsic
12. At the hundredth meridian
13. It's a good life
14. The kids don't get it
15. Grace too
16. Wheat kings
17. Yer not the ocean
18. Locked in the trunk of a car
19. Family band
---
20. Escape is at hand
21. Pretend
22. On the verge
