I caught Mays and July Talk last Saturday night in Halifax. July Talk is a hard act to follow as an opener but Mays was up to the task. He generally won't regale you with witty anecdotes all night, but he will give you one hell of a proper rock n' roll show. At various points he had four guitarists on stage, creating a wall of raucous sound that reverberated around the barn. Even with all the fretwork fireworks the star of the show was Loel Campbell, Wintersleep drummer and Matt May's album producer. He's a monster on the drums, maybe one of the best out there right now, and together with Charles Spearin (he of Broken Social Scene and the Gord Downie Secret Path Band) he laid down a tight groove for Matt to make beautiful noise over. Just a top notch group of musicians. I'd highly, highly recommend that if you get the chance to see this band he's put together, take it! It will be one the best shows you see all year.

I had tickets for the Halifax show, but ended up not being able to make it. Was really looking forward to it!

Just got my tickets ... get 'em fast, not much choice left except up in the cramped balcony seats.

Got a couple in the first balcony. They were $20 each. I don't mind a slightly restricted view at that price.

I saw the New Pornos' LFMH last October. The ticket situation was similar, but there were also a lot of empty seats at the show - I think the sponsors (TD's the title sponsor) get a bunch of freebies and a lot of them went unused. Stoked for this one. We're seeing Jimmy Carr the next night, so it'll be a very diverse weekend :p

I hate to say it, but you missed a good one! The half arena set-up with the stage at centre ice was used and I think it was close to sold-out. I would estimate there were 3,000 people there. I was surprised when I bought tickets that Mays was the headliner and not July Talk. Maybe he received top billing simply because it was a home-coming show for him. He finished the night with an encore of "On the Hood" and a fun cover Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark", for which he brought out both the members of July Talk and The Beaches.

Yeah a couple guys on my hockey team went to the Fredericton show and said it was really good. I just assumed July Talk were going to the headliner as well. I’ve actually never saw July Talk live, but I know they put on a great show. They are one of my go to YouTube bands haha. I’ve seen Matt Mays a few times over the years, but never in an arena type setting.

I've seen him once in the Metro Centre before, opening for Blue Rodeo (he's good friends with Greg Keelor... if you watch the Neil Young show "Homecoming" you can see Matt sitting in the front row, a ticket given to him by Keelor who couldn't attend). This was his first time headlining an area show and while he was great, my preference will always be to see him in a smaller environment.

I got a few in the gallery. Really looking forward to this, especially with Kathleen also playing. I saw Matt Mays last year when he came through London, just after he released the EP that contained songs from the new album. He was, as always, fantastic.

Kathleen Edwards was amazing. Had to leave half way through Matt Mays because it was way too loud. Anyone who stayed probably suffered permanent hearing damage. I put earbuds in to mitigate and it only resulted in massive distortion. I've seen well over 100 shows in my life, from arenas, to theaters to small bars and that was without a doubt the loudest show I've ever seen, by far. I guess I'm just getting old.

Awesome poster for the upcoming Matt Mays/Lowest of the Low show at Kee to Bala on Canada Day. Apparently these will be on sale at the venue for all you lucky bastards who get tickets to this. I'm jealous.

We were up in the balcony and tucked at the side for the Massey Hall show. Sure seemed like it would have been really loud if we were taking the full brunt of the speakers. His show was great. Kathleen was fantastic too. A great night for music, but yeah loud

Matt's first four albums are being released on vinyl for the first time in June.

Matt Mays includes a bonus 7” featuring the long lost original recording of “City of Lakes”

Matt Mays & El Torpedo is double vinyl with an updated mini poster insert and the bonus track “Wasn’t Meant to Be”

…When the Angels Make Contact is also double vinyl and includes a full-size movie poster for the film (which Matt assures us is really coming out some day…)

Terminal Romance also comes with a bonus 7” including the unreleased banger “Get Lucky”

Matt is teasing something called "Twice Upon a Hell of a Time", coming out on October 19th. Sounds like it's gonna be acoustic/alternate versions of the songs from "Once Upon..."

Here's Ola Volo:
