Matt Mays- Once Upon a Hell of a Time
#1

Quote:Canadian rocker Matt Mays gave us Coyote back in 2012, and he's finally ready to follow it up with a new LP titled Once Upon a Hell of a Time. Before the full record arrives this fall, though, Mays is releasing a four-song album sampler on Friday (April 21).

The new record was co-produced by Mays and Loel Campbell at an array of locations, including California and New York, as well as British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Later this week, the first four songs to be unveiled will be "Faint of Heart," "Ola Volo," "Sentimental Sins" and "Station Out of Range."

"The full album has a pretty strong theme or feeling and I wanted that to come across right away," Mays said in a statement. "This is party rock for the heartbroken. And you can't leave a party short of tunes, or better yet, you can't leave the sad and lonely folks with just one song to cry to. So, why just release one song when you can leak four?!"

In conjunction with the album preview, Mays has announced a handful of upcoming Canadian shows. You can see the list of gigs down below.

More tour dates are expected to "fill in all the spaces and places in between" soon, and full Once Upon a Hell of a Time details should be on the way shortly, as well.

Tour dates:

04/19 Waterloo, ON - Maxwell's
04/20 Toronto, ON - Lee's Palace (CMW)
04/21 London, ON - Rum Runners
05/19 Cowichan, BC - Laketown Rock Festival
08/05 New Glasgow, NS - The Riverfront Jubilee
08/06 Saint John, NB - Area 506 Fest

Agree about Coyote.

I'm actually seeing him tomorrow night in Waterloo - curious to see how the new stuff sounds.

I really liked Coyote, but I've also really liked everything he's done. First post-Jay album, but not sure how much Jay was doing in the studio anyways? y impression is he's a bit of a one-man operation when it comes to the studio. Like the four song preview.

Finally got a chance to spend some time with Once Upon a Hell of a Time. Man, what a solid album front to back. I like pretty much all of Matt's output, but this might be one of his best. It's easily in my top ten albums of the year.

Just came across this cool 15-minute documentary on the making of the new album.

I just bought this album yesterday (haven't yet listened through at work) and am going to get tix to his Massey Hall show in May -- based entirely on a number of you putting this album on your 2017 End of Year Lists ... time for me to grow as a person.

"Drunken Angels" is my favourite song on the album - it has such a great melody and flow. "Station out of Range" is a close second - that pounding drum intro is great!

Just got my tickets ... get 'em fast, not much choice left except up in the cramped balcony seats.
