A lyricist writes lyrics. A songwriter writes songs. Lyrics are a part of a song. A song doesn't require lyrics.

The term "songwriter" is grossly overused, then. Everyone in the Maritimes is referred to as a songwriter and I doubt that most of them wrote the music for their songs.
