Yeah...um....this Order of Canada thing is pretty moronic me thinks. This appointment of Mr. Morgentyler certainly doesn't evoke feelings of pride in my country.

Ditto. Neither of us will convince the other that his view on abortion is wrong.
However, Morgentaler has undeniably shown courage and determination, and furthermore he has been vindicated by parliament. I don't think the Order of Canada is out of place, on those grounds.

What do you think about the argument that recipients of the Order should be people which all Canadians would unite around as 'distinguished' (the whole thing is really ambiguous and unimportant, anyway)? Some would say that, despite his 'courage,' Morgentaler remains a divisive character. Weak argument? Thoughts?

I'd say that the notion of Canadians truly uniting around anyone of real substance is false.
What differs in this case is the nature of the controversy -- it's not a question of whether his contribution to Canada is significant enough to be recognized, but whether his contribution is appropriate. So I can sympathize with your line of argument.
