No Country for Old Men - The Horrible Esthete - 12-07-2007

Anyone see it?

Jenna and I did, and it's very powerful, and very creepy. Exactly what I expect from Joel & Ethan Coen. It has one of the best "villains" of all time, imo. Plenty of suspense and action, and excellent acting, direction, and cinematography. But be warned: there's lots of graphic violence.

I did not read the book, though I do like Cormac McCarthy. Reading it first may help in absorbing the finale.

I highly recommend the film whether you read the book or not.

seen the preview when i rented the John cusack/Sam L Jackson flick, and Ya i thought wow this film is a must see Confused

Brilliant film! By far the best thriller I've seen in a while. Javier Bardem should get an Oscar for that performance. He was creepy as hell. Tommy Lee Jones was awesome as well.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but can someone explain what the hell happened at the end? I was starting to drift off by that point and next thing you know the credits are rolling. I think most people in the theater were having a similar reaction, like we were all looking for the remote to rewind back a couple minutes. (Cronenberg's Spider was like that too, and very sneaky in how it gets ya thinking after the fact).

Side note, the actress who played Josh Brolin's wife looked really familiar but I couldn't place her. But with the magic of IMDB it turns out she played the character of Diane in Trainspotting way back in the day. That surprised me.

And yeah, the villain is a creeeeeeeepy looking dude.

I saw it with friend who fell asleep half way into the film. I can totally understand why some people may find the film boring. Personally I loved the slow pace of the film and the simple dialogue. It felt like Texas.

The ending. Well, this is America. Things can only end one way.

There's very little negative criticism from me. As far as the filmmaking goes, I'd risk to say that it was flawless. Perfect pace, gripping and suspenseful; it never lost focus. As far as the plot goes, it's up to the viewer's interpretation. It's a very existential peice, so I can see people being thrown by its construction.
