It's got to be "The Rules"...ruins a near-perfect record. But really, I can't think of much else. Some of Road Apples, Born In The Water and Bring It All Back simply sound too much like everything else on that record, but maybe that's what they were hittin' for.
I'm sure everyone would agree, songs and records go in cycles, one song you may detest at one point could be your favourite at some later point...

I hear you guys. It was really such a relief to hear IBE this summer. Frankly, with 2-3 exceptions (Music @ Work, Good Life, Puttin Down) I really think the last two albums are not in the same league as ANY of the others. I do dig, like 100% of the new disc.

I'd say maybe She Didn't Know, just cause I don't really like the background singing... It's a decent song, just that little bit that puts me off it...

And I'm a little suprised to hear Fiddler's Green mentioned! It's one of my favourites for sure!

I'm gonna take a kickin' for this, but, try as hard a I might, I just can't get into "Fire in the Hole". I skip it everytime I fire up that CD. I think the band must really like it, cause I've seen them do it a number of times live. However, even on stage, when they launch into this tune, it's time to get a beer.

- MountainHip - 11-14-2004

I never really liked Fire in the Hole either, some people like it because it's one of the Hip's "hardest" songs, that you can go nuts to, in an angry way.

I'd rather think of Fully Completely in that sense, that's a song that I feel encites the people to all matter of things. Heksenketel really displays that.

Yeah, I agree with you there. To me it's kinda loud, not that loud is a totally bad thing, and obnoxious. And the vocals have this cheesy reverb effect on them that brings down the oveall production value of the song.

Toronto 4 isn't that bad. I hear you on the other 4 for sure.

Have too disagree with she didn't know. Excellent song.

Fire in the Hole, I'll agree with you as far as the album version goes, but live, COME ON!! Love the rants before Gord gets into it!!

I'm kinda of the opinion that there are no bad hip songs except for Evelyn.

But if you forced me to pick my least favourite, most skipped over, I'd pick The Rules or Summer's Killing Us

I'm not the biggest fan of Summer either. Worst song on IBE I feel. Cannot really say why.

- hipman332001 - 11-14-2004

Interesting choices. Coconut studio is not that good, but I saw one Live in Dallas in '96 that blew my head off. I like most all Hip songs, but the one that never did anything for me is "Fireworks". The lyrics are good, but the tune is not Hip-like. I've been to 35 shows now and I swear to Gord that since they started playing that song I have gotten one at every single show!! There is my two cents. Peace.

i have to step in to defend a few here:

The Rules-i'm shocked this was picked as a least favourite, it's an incredible song, there isn't another in their catalogue that's anything like it at all, the lyrics are brilliant, and its vibe is an interesting change of pace sandwiched in between trails and falls.

Fire In The Hole-you've got to be kidding me, it's beyond me how you can't love this song to pieces, i'd shit if i heard it live, hopefully i will one of these days *crosses fingers*

Tiger The Lion-possibly the best track on M@W, and it's amazing live, heavy mellow taken to a new level

The Luxury-i love the smooth groove, but the gritty chorus makes iit, vintage "oldschool hip"

Are You Ready To Love-love the lyrics, and once again, more than anything, i love the vibe i get from it, it's so uplifting and empowering, a perfect opening track for IVL.

A Beautiful Thing-wasn't too big on it at first, but it grew on me, the solo is killer, and overall it's just a really gorgeous song

Fireworks-it might be over played in concert, but i'm confident it'll stand the test of time and be remembered as a signature piece of theirs, this is another one that's just so uplifting and motivational that it'll always have a special place in my heart, not to mention it's impossibly catchy, and is possibly the hip's best sing along song

- grooveless touque - 11-14-2004

I too must defend The Rules. I can see why some people think it's boring, but in its own way, set aside from the Hip's art-rock discography, it's a simple but powerfully beautiful song. It lulls you the same way Flamenco or Every Irrelevence does.

A Beautiful Thing is, ironically, the least beautiful thing in the Hip's catalogue. No flow, no melody, no hook, almost no effort whatsoever. Sounds tossed-off and half-formed. Definitely my least favourite song.

- Jenna_Bird - 11-14-2004

Neil, you're only digging this non-friendship pit deeper. I was agreeing with you, word for word, until you revealed your dislike for "A Beautiful Thing". Perhaps its just the memories that the song evokes, but it is only of my favorites. It may not be the tightest song technically, or the most original in terms of lyrics, but I think there are songs that have already been mentioned (like Coconut Cream) that are far less appealing. Just my silly little opinion.
