My 1st impressions are mostly favorable except TATH side b is dished & warped, unplayable.
I messaged MusicVaultz let them know I would try & flatten under a weight for several days (28 day return policy).

DFN: while far from perfect, an improvement compared to the original vinyl :thumb:
TATH: takes it's mastering cues from the aforementioned DFN reissue, but it just doesn't work for me on this particular record
The original vinyl is the clear winner IMO. Also, what's up with the blank 4th side? A second slab of vinyl for 3 songs...really...mickey mouse :roll:

Well because there are 4/5 songs on the 1st two sides and sound quality is affected if you cram music onto sids, so it is preferable to have less per side really. With the number of songs on sides 1 and 2 I do not think they could/should try to cram 3 more songs in there.

This pressing is really growing on me. Four listens and the record seems to be opening up with every spin. Like hearing this album, the way it should sound, for the first time. Sure, the vocals are still a bit harsh on some tracks, but this album now has balls. Not sure where these records were pressed, but after a good cleaning, then rinse, they sound surprisingly quiet. Oh, and throw those terrible paper inner sleeves as far away as possible.

DFN - biggest diff. of the 3 from the CDs to my ears/memory.
I was happy with the low-fi grunge on the CD (have a needledrop somewhere) probably my favorite album.
Precision Recordings Pressings in Burlington, MMP was their 1st pressing ever.
As for time per side it's more a question of advantages vs disadvantages as opposed to good vs bad (because of all the other variables in the final product).
Bring on the others, PP thru to WC!

Finally had a chance to listen to DFN. My favorite Hip album, and maybe the weakest sounding in its original form. It's always sounded a bit sterile, for lack of a better word. If it was a more modern recording, I'd blame compression, but I think in this case it was just the sound of the studio and possibly the desired goal for the recording engineer. That said, it's a darker album and the recording captures some of that feeling. DFN and TTH were both recorded at Kingsway in New Orleans, and both sort of have the same sound for me.
On to the new vinyl, it does have a bit more life than the original CD or original vinyl (IMO). Especially as you move through the album. Grace I did not find much of a difference, songs like So Hard Done By, Thugs, Inevitability of Death, Scared there was a noticeable sonic improvement and some subtleties I'd not really noticed or appreciated in the rhythm guitar and drums.
I have a pretty extensive vinyl collection and a solid investment in good equipment to play vinyl, but I'm not a waveform guy -- I appreciate some of the nuances that an original vinyl release or a good remaster can reveal. DFN, though likely limited by the source recordings, I think does more for the release than say the recent FC reissues (which is OK). It's not an album I'd play to show the benefits of vinyl, but I'll play this one more then the original releases.

The more prominent bottom end (kick drum/bass guitar) on this remaster is welcomed. After about 5 listens, I played the original vinyl and well let's just say, I won't be spinning the original again anytime soon.

It can be okay, but if you google around to places that press vinyl or read about it the common answer is that about 25 minutes per side is the upper limit and ideal is closer to 22-23 for a 33 rpm record. Of course there will be exceptions to every rule. Less per side helps cut down on things like inner groove distortion, to name one benefit. It still has to be mastered/cut well in the end.

All I used was a carbon brush, but it took an extra pass or two. MoFi sleeves as well.

I could only afford a Spin-Clean, better than sink/microfibre/distilled-water.
Also glued a few, great results if you're patient.
