That's what I loved about IBE, it had a very live, messy feel to it. You don't hear that in music much these days and that's too bad. IBE has such a good vibe to it, one that was missing on WATS.
I hear you - and I think it was something they were intentionally going for with IBE and I think, like me and you, some fans just want prefer different feels to an album.
I remember Gord saying in an interview (I think on The Hour) that he wanted to take World Container on the road and that's where you start disgracing it a little bit, make it more messy, new melodies come out etc. Maybe I am just spoiled by the amount of live shows available, but I really subscribe to the idea that the recorded album should be polished off and produced...it's the only time we'll really get to hear it like that. At that point, you get to hear it evolve, get twisted and find different melodies in the messier nature of the live performance. I only started liking frozen in my tracks after hearing it live, as a but of an example of what I'm talking about. I hope what I'm saying makes some sense haha.

Totally agree. I wasn't too keen on Frozen in My Tracks on the album, but that song turned into an absolute beast in concert. Gord getting the crowd to sing along with him during the "whoaaa...ooooh" part during the choruses was cool too.
As for IBE, a lot of that messy, live feel was due to Adam Kasper's production. I remember the band saying that he was very "punk rock" in the way he liked to record, doing it live off the floor in one or two takes and then having a song fully tracked and mixed in one afternoon. Bob Rock on the other hand likes to make big, epic, polished albums with a gazillion overdubs, strings, keyboards, bells and whistles. And that was my main beef with Bob's production. When they play live, the Hip have that rough "anything can happen" edge to them that makes their performances so transcendent and unpredictable. Bob Rock polished away all those edges, and that's why an album like WATS sounds so flat and lifeless. I'm hoping that Gavin Brown gives them a nice balance of the two. Gord's vocals need to be somewhat smooth and polished, while at the same time the band needs to have the freedom to rock out in the studio and capture that edgy, kick-you-in-the-nuts feel of their live show.

Who did the remastered Fully Completely tracks for Yer Favourites? To me that is the quintessential way to mix the Hip. That sounded incredible.

I have a hard time listening to the tracks on FC now after I heard them on Yer Favourites. They are so much better sounding

I believe Sinclair's recent quote was that they were recording in Toronto with Gavin Brown for a couple of weeks, and then heading back to the Bathouse to put the "finishing touches" on the album. My guess is that the record is pretty much in the can at this point, save for the mixing, mastering, artwork, etc...
