First thing I do when I get home is calling my brother and thanking him for introducing me to the Hip. Actually, I think I might just email him. I'll bawl my eyes out if I talk on the phone.

One day I heard him blasting Another Midnight in his bedroom as I was playing hockey outside, taking shots against the house. I stopped and listened during the "Oh ma, he's dying". The hook was set. I've adored and cherished them ever since. I was 11 at the time, so I begged him relentlessly "Can I borrow Up To Here?' and then "Can I borrow that Road Apples tape?" No one outside of family and friends has impacted my life as much as the Hip.

I remember this story from a way back where they were doing brain surgery on this guy while he was awake. They would press on areas of the brain, and the guy would say what he was thinking.
Alot of the time, they would press on his brain and he would be thinking of a Led Zeppelin song. After doing this for hours, the brain surgeon said he brain was arranged according to Led Zeppelin albums !

I'm positive mine is arranged according to Hip Albums.

I was sad when I heard; not nearly as sad as when we heard the news in May 2016 but it still hit me pretty hard. But, since it wasn't completely unexpected, I din't take it as hard as I thought I might have.

Then I picked up my guitar and started to play; whole songs, riffs, solos; whatever came to mind and suddenly I'm losing it. It is incredible how much this music has meant to me and I'm so grateful that Gord and the boys chose to pursue this career and share their gifts with us.

In the ulcerating silence perspective comes
The way it always does for it's ransom
So randomly somebody calls
The phone rings and it brings Niagara Falls

At three o'clock in the morning
"You'd better be dying" and you were
So we talked about time and where it went
Unremarkable events
And how one day took two days and they got spent
How you'd continue, carefully, in degrees
Trying to do one true beautiful thing

And your beautiful thing
It'd be
A beautiful thing
To see
That beautiful thing
Continuing

"I don't live there, I just commute"
Secretly cradling a joint and I might puke
A fumble with the keys under duress
The point is this is practise duress

At three o'clock in the morning
"You'd better be dying" and you were
So we talked about things and where they went
Big remarkable events
And how each day's a new day and they get spent
How you'd continue, artfully, like the breeze
Trying to do one true beautiful thing

And your beautiful thing
It'd be
A beautiful thing
To see
That beautiful thing
Continuing
Your beautiful thing
Continuing

Here, here. I'm keeping this thread open all day at work.

I just want to get in a car, put the windows down, and blare the hip down some dusty, gravel road.

Chris Tanz Wrote:Can we all, can you all, just stay here for a bit, while I, while we, collect ourselves. There's too much to say, too much to write, too much to think, too much to feel. We passed through paroxysms of grief last year, heights of elation last year, introspection last year, gratitude, anticipation. We knew but didn't know what was coming. I can't process it fast enough and I don't want this place, this thread to ebb with some quick words that cannot express it enough. So please, let's just stay here for a bit. This place is only here. The whole of Canada and honourary Canadians that they, that he, made will celebrate him deeply and feel sorrow deeply, but this place is not that place. This place is the inner sanctum of that place. It's at the kernel of it, where whole songs are shorthands, all songs are one song and that song is don't forget.

No musician or band had more of an effect on my life than Gord and the Hip, no one wrote lyrics like him and thankfully his genius and humanity will live forever in his music. RIP to a legend, best wishes to friends and family.

Great read. Including this:
...in 2017.....,All the while, he was writing and recording: with the Hip, keyboardist Kevin Hearn, avant-garde noisemakers Dinner is Ruined, and separate projects with producers Kevin Drew and Bob Rock.
