Billy Wrote:chives Wrote:why is everyone saying the old Hip Club was free? did you not have to buy IVL to be a member??? I think if you make it a one-time fee to get in (a la buying a cd/dvd, etc..), then that should be enough, not yearly payments....
I think the assumption is that we, Hipbasers, would have bought the album regardless, so in essence the Club was a free bonus.
I don't know, I think if you keep the club membership going with the purchase of each cd/dvd, etc.. and make it worthwhile, then that should be plenty for the avg. fan and hardcore fan to be happy. rarities, front of the line tix, maybe special backstage contests. however the club plays out, it has to be kept up to date and interesting. so you could have just like we have here at hipbase....groupie, experienced groupie, completeist..etc.. with each cd you buy, you move up a step, the more you move up, the more access you get...

Makes a certain sense. A chronological merit system, rather than a purely cash & carry operation.

That's completely counterproductive for a band to do.
Talk about driving divisions between fans. That creates a kind of hierarchy in which I get to be an uberfan simply because I was there longer. You want to piss off and drive away new fans, that's the way to do it.

Thats reassuring, I think its a dumb idea. The Hip Club was a great idea and the fact that it was free was even better, but imo, it could be much more better. I did have some problems with the pre-sales for the shows, and I wasn't the only one. Not that Im bitter or anything, I still made it to a lot of shows and had good seats, so yeah it had its problems maybe not major problems, but now that it has pretty much fizzled out, that or the band just isn't making any use of it and doesnt plan to for awhile ( I imagine its both) where do we go from here? Like I said earlier I would gladly pay the money to have a re-vamped Hip Club or something like it, I dont think it makes someone a bigger or better fan belonging to the fan club, it just makes them a fan, a fan who wants to get something for his money and if the band is willing to share some of itself with its fans for a price, because hey, all things cost money in some way or another and the band is in the music business, I see nothing wrong with it at all, its a win-win situation. Maybe the better question to ask is, do we need a Hip Fan Club? I can see both sides of the arguement, but if I had to vote on it, I would support a Fan Club all the way. Knowing I have a better chance of getting tickets (good tickets) for all the shows is something that I want, if the Hip Club stays the same way, free and gets some improving and a face-lift, Id be totally satisfied with that.

I would pay to join an official hip fan club. All this talk of a fan club that costs money creating a barrier between the music and the people and a heirarchy between fans is ridiculous. If you are a big enough fan you will join the fanclub. Look at the 10 club, people don't seem to mind joining that. I myself am not a big enough Pearl Jam fan, although I do enjoy their music, to join the club, but I certainly don't dislike Pearl Jam because I feel they are creating a barrier between me and their music. The people that join fanclubs are big fans of the band. People that are casual fans of a band are not going to join a fanclub, so the argument that a heirarchy will exist by making people pay to gain insider access and bonuses from a band doesn't make any sence. That being said if an official fanclub were set up that cost money to join I would expect it to be updated and kept interesting for the fans and have perks such as private shows and ticket presales for members, or discounts on merchandise like the old hipclub did. Major fans of bands are the only people who would care about perks such as these and thats why they would join the club. Right now what MAv is providibg for us, i.e. his amazing video's and tidbits of info about the band and their current events is just as good if not better than the hipclub was. I would agree with Lizard King if the old hipclub was revamped and we could once again gain the same benefits i.e. private gigs and discounted merchandise and ticket pre-sales I would be all for it.

You say the notion of a hierarchy is ridiculous, but your post pretty clearly illustrated exactly how the heirarchy would be created! Hardcore fans would join; casual fans would not. Once we start categorizing fans, you've got yourself a heirarchy.
Don't get me wrong - I don't care if there is one or not. And I don't really care if someone wants to bestow a label upon me based on my affiliation or not. I know where I stand, and paying a fee isn't going to change that. But to suggest there would be no hierarchy is silly.
Put me down in the category of "I am a big, big fan but have a wife and child to provide for, and thus membership in a fan club is pretty far down my list of priorities, despite my undying love for all things TTH."

Not sure why I thought of this right now, but this would have been the best April Fools joke. "Hipbase starting monthly fee charges"

Nice thread... lots of great ideas being suggested. I'll add my 2 cents for what it's worth.
Most fanclubs I've inquired about are not that expensive to join (the Rolling Stones, U2, and Metallica aside) most cost between $5 and $20 annually. I think those costs are reasonable, but that all depends on how much you like the music these bands create and how badly you want the perks offered with a membership to the "club".
As a member of Pearl Jams 10Club, paying $20 annually for a membership is worth it (for me) considering you get a few newsletters each year, a 7" Xmas single on vinyl, and dibs on fantastic concert tickets. Is there a hierarchy created amongst fans by offering this type of product? Yes. Is this a bad thing? In my opinion... No. If I like a band, and I want what they are offering with a membership to a fanclub, I'm going to buy it. ANYONE can buy it. Everyone pays the same amount, it's not exclusive to just a certain portion of society, anyone can join. If a person doesn't join the club, they most likely will not care there is a hierarchy because they won't be aware of it. If they do find out about it they have the same opportunity to join as everyone else.
A $5, $10, or $20 purchase isn't going to put you in the poor house folks, it's the same price you would pay for a CD.
I hope the Hip decide to offer something similar to Pearl Jam (access to tickets before they go onsale to the genral Public, maybe a newsletter or two, some exclusive online content, and maybe a few songs thrown our way). I know I'd buy it. I love and will support this band anyway I can.
Cheers

So, does anyone have the same problem with their HipClubCard as I do? It has been sitting in my wallet for some 3 or 4 years now, and is cracking in two. Kinda looks like my old health card, before they came out with the new picture ID version. What do I do if I lose this number? My whole identity will be gone! Well, not really, but I'll lose access to any further promotions the Hip may do using these old cards.
MAV, my two cents = NEW CARDS.

You will never see that day, maybe a donation drive, that is about it.

I too miss the Henhouse. Some of the ole regulars are still there, but not all. We had the most memorable trip to Six Flags Darien Lake when the HIP played there. A huge group of fans all organized through the Henhouse went down camping the day before. We enjoyed campfires, chatting and making lifelong friends.
Some sort of club, that would join us together for the betterment of the band. We could be given optioins of helping out somehow with Charity Events or given early news of concerts so that the group could organize such get-togethers. Blue Rodeo's forum does such events. I've been to a few. Yearly they have a BR Crazies event in Stratford. Sometimes hanging out with fans who share a common bond because of a musical group is as inspiring as the live music itself!! And amazing things can happen when groups of motivated people get together.
I'd love to have some sort of group, but to pay yearly for it, well I'd likely forget, reminds me I have to go pay my CAA for the year!!
But it's nice to hear the guys are thinking this way and have put a great guy such as Mav on the job!!! Now if you need a party organizer!! I'm your gal!! :-)
