Tickets for Guelph Lake concert sold out long in advance of last night's performance

In many ways, it was so very typically Canadian.
Until you were right there, you didn't know there was a concert going on. There was no throng of cars to follow, and few rambunctious fans.
A couple of lackadaisical scalpers set up on lawn chairs were the only thing betraying the fact the 5,000 tickets for last night's Tragically Hip concert at Guelph Lake had been snapped up earlier this year in just half an hour.
That's not to say that once you were there, the fans weren't ecstatic.
One ticketless group sat just across the water from the show, close enough to hear everything but see nothing.
The guys in the group were taking off their shirts and getting ready to swim across.
When asked why it was worth the dip, they looked shocked.
"You're Canadian?" asked Marian Lucic. "Then you don't have to ask.
"It's the same reason you break the ice to go into the water, or go winter camping or swimming on the May 24th weekend," he said.
"It represents every time you sat around the camp fire and sang songs."
They had come to Guelph Lake straight from a canoe trip at Algonquin Park, hoping to catch some of the music, which also included The Weakerthans and Buck 65, coming from the Hillside community stage.
And they were ready to do anything to get in.
They saw someone leaving who had a wristband pass and asked her if they could have it. But when they couldn't peel it off, they decided instead it might just be late enough in the concert that they could sneak in.
Their low-key sentiment was reflected in the ticket-holding crowd. They were there to chat and hang out and just drink in the music.
The crowd was eclectic -- young and old, parents with their children, young couples and true fan club members, decked out in matching tour T-shirts.
Part way through the show, lead singer Gord Downey himself took time to wish a couple of the fans a happy 50th wedding anniversary.
And as the black clouds released a bit of a drizzle, fans wrapped themselves in blankets, sat underneath tents or trucks. But it didn't sway their focus on the music and did little to deter those who had rowed boats out into the water and were enjoying the show from there.
Despite the low-key nature of the show, fans were adamant about the group's Canadian-ness.
"It's like the anthem of Canada," said Liz Vanstone, who'd come from Listowel to see the concert.
"It's so Canadian -- you can sing along to every song."
Ryan Sneddon had to take the evening off work to be there. If he hadn't gotten the time off, he probably still would've sneaked out.
"I can get another job, but I can't see the Hip in Guelph again," he said.
And although many were devoted fans, few were as devoted as Christie Jamieson.
She's seen the Hip 30 times, sometimes buying tickets to concerts at the same venue three nights in a row.
"We just went to Mexico for a week, and I was more excited about seeing the Hip," she gushed.
She's a member of every radio station in the area so she can get presale tickets. She's already got tickets for next weekend's Toronto show, and for the Hip's concert in Stratford in September.
"It's a bit of a sickness," explained her friend, Scott Maile. But he's a fan himself.
"It's got that summer feel," he said. "In the dead of winter, you hear a Hip song and feel 'I should be having a barbecue on the patio.' "
And he loves the crowd.
"It's not a common thing to have stabbings or shootings at a Hip show. Maybe too much drinking -- but even so they don't get aggressive, just pass out under a tree."
