Inside my kettle
Does anyone know what "kettle" refers to here?
I'm assuming it's a geological term, i.e., "kettle depression"? Is that correct?
Or is it some slang term for a tin shack or something?
I thought it might be a metaphor for depression -- something going on in his head and its not so good
- or perhaps it is a line in Mowat's Lost in the Barrens?
I'm pretty literal -- so I hear it and think of some dude lost/stranded in a very cold place, huddled in a primitive shelter (a tin shack?) waiting out winter, who has recently exhausted of his wood suppply -- so he can't boil water. Too cold in his kettle, just a symbol of the real trouble he's in.

Does the album's title, 'We Are The Same' refer to the band being the same as it ever was, despite heading off in new directions, or does it refer to the dialogue through all these songs that Gord referred to in his interview with Strombo last night? Or does it refer to the dynamic that the band and its fans share? The hip love the endless possibility of meanings.
Or maybe WATS refers to each person on the planet. Spiritual reference?

Listen to the version from 2009-04-28 as Gord explains some of what it is about as soon as the song ends.

"As it turns out, there's a whole other world of sounds
Of perfect fifths, low skids, and Arctic howls
All saying, are you going through something?"

I think it's the latter. At the Massey shows Gord's been introducing the song as a journey that starts in a hotel room in Chicago, travels down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and then up to the tar sands of Northern Alberta ("Florida without the ocean"). A lot of the staff accommodations up there are just trailers at or near the work site. "Tin palace" is a common term for them, so kettle probably works just as well.

When the tour started, I hated hearing this song live. As an opener, it seemed too long and didn't start the show off the right way. However, going into Massey #5 (the 6th TO show I've caught this tour), I was actually looking forward to hearing it. It took me a few listens, but the three pieces actually fit well together and I like the "Don't You Wanna See How It Ends" ending.
Assuming they play it on Tuesday, I'll have spent almost 70 minutes hearing this song live.

In my opinion which is my take on it, regardless of what some others say its about, I see it as being about a guy losing his love and being depressed and thinking of suicide and then going into auto pilot then coming out of the depression.
Let me explain
Hiding his head under the pillow and shutting Chicago out.
To me that says his love is in Chicago and he is trying to deal with the pain of loss and can only put his head under his pillow and try to forget it.
Working in this New New Orleans World and working like a ghost and No smiling , Making his face a mask,
To me that part is about getting on with it and getting over the heart ach and just trying to get over it and not showing the hurt and pain , just being on auto pilot.
The Athabaska tar sands are to me the sinking pit of depression that to sink in the tar sands would be almost impossible to get out of like a deep depression. Suicide and depression tend to play in the same sand box often.
Dont ya wanna see how it end, when the door finally starts to open to me is talking about making the decision to go on with it and not be depressed anymore n give up on the feeling of hoplessness and showing no sadness.
Watching the door open to the rest of life. If your dead you dont get to see the door open.
The Depression Suite name makes me think that its about a person going thru depression. The Suite being the opera play kinda thing, hence the 3 parts.
Beginning. Being depressed losing it. Hiding under a pillow
Mid part. Trying to get on with it and coasting and being unsure if you want to contine and hiding behind a mask.
Part 3. Standing up and saying I didnt come here (to love) to get lost in the barrens. and taking contorl again. ( get my little slice of heaven) and then seeing that depression leave and making the choice to watch the door open to the rest of your life.
Thats my take on it.
Strange but true that my take on it.
I could be way way way off base but thats the way I see it and it makes the song so much better for me to see it that way.
What do you think of that.
