The Rock / NewOrleansWorld / Don't You Wanna See How It Ends
#1

Right on.
Sounds epic.

All three are great together. My favourite is NewOrleansWorld, especially the transition between the first two.

Does anybody want to tell me what the arrangement of this song was like tonight at the Bathouse? I very curious to know what this will sound like live. This song + The Last Recluse are truly the songs I am absolutely hooked to right now. Just by listening to The Suite, I get justification for all the money being spent towards catching a few shows this spring.

The show opened with Strombo walking outside with some song in the background. The song turned out to be the opening of Depression, which turned on full volume when Strombo walked inside. To be honest, since this was the first song of the evening it sounded awesome but not as great as it couldve been. The guys (Gord especially) seemed a bit weirded out by the cameras and the whole "no one there but really thousands across the country watching thing". Otherwise it was amazing, the last transitition still sounds weird to me.

Anyways, as a violin player I am loving the strings haha.

I thought it sounded absolutely fucking amazing, every song was out of this world Confusedhock: It was just the 5 of em and the keyboard dood, I think it gonna be amazing Live for sure...

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

I was certain that I recognized the keyboard player from somewhere, but I didn't figure it out until Robby revealed who it was. Turns out it's multi-instrumentalist Jim Bryson. He plays guitar and keyboards in Kathleen Edwards' band, and also fronts his own band in Ottawa called The Occasionals. Dude is a fantastic musician and he'll make a great addition to the Hip on tour. Kinda like what Chris Brown added on the 2000 "Evening With" tour.

Loving Loving Loving It.

But I think The Rock is my favourite. So far, anyways.

So does the title of this song, "The Depression Suite" refer to the room where our tragic hero buries his head under the pillow or does it refer to the Suite of songs that encompass the entirety of the 9:00 minutes??

Does the album's title, 'We Are The Same' refer to the band being the same as it ever was, despite heading off in new directions, or does it refer to the dialogue through all these songs that Gord referred to in his interview with Strombo last night? Or does it refer to the dynamic that the band and its fans share? The hip love the endless possibility of meanings.

I'd like to hear the New Orleans Medley at a concert.
New Orleans is Sinking-->If New Orleans is Beat-->NewOrleansWorld.
Anybody else?

By far the best song on WATS.(imo).This is probably their most comprehensive song ever.Goes back to the days of mini-operas.Heres a 6 part song by the who called A Quick One While Hes Away(1967).I would bet money that this song has an influence on Depression Suite.Very Similar. WATS has The Who sound all over it.

As always, both.

IMHO, it also refers in part to the subject of the three pieces, the economic recession. Our tragic hero going through troubled times and sleepless nights, working his ass off to prove himself and keep his job, and the oil boom in Alberta opening a door that could possibly get him out of this mess (as well as providing some parts of the country with the lowest unemployment rates in the last 100 years).

From the instant Strombo walked us into the front doors of the Bathouse this strong struck me as something special. It's a beautiful ride, and I can't pick one third out from the rest because they are all great as a package. Definately my favourite song on the album at this point.

I really wish the naysayers wouldn't criticize it. If any other well known band made this it would be dominating the airwaves and hailed as one of the most epic songs to grace our radio stations ever blah blah. But because it's the Hip and it doesn't sound like Little Bones mixed with 38 Years Old - it's a letdown.

I think Coldplay or Nickelback could record farts for 5 minutes and it would still get mega airtime. Critics would say "It's bold, creative and inventive." Yes I'm bitter lol

That's just not true. Rarely if ever are you going to see ANY 9 minute song dominating any airwaves. But the song is supremely awesome, especially the last movement. Ah the whole thing's great. :music
