The new property owners must be completely unaware of the significance of the wall, otherwise I'll bet they wouldn't have painted over it. What is the signifacance of the wall???Really, some guy aquainted with the band wrote it, there is really no significance. Execpt for Hip fans of course.

I don't know, I guess I just like to romanticise it. Since the Hip are pretty much the biggest thing to ever come out of that town, I like to think that the city would want to keep it there. Also because it's been forever immortalized in an album sleeve.

Well, the wall has been painted over, with the exception of right underneath the pipe that runs along the wall.
The wall was located in an alley on the side of 343 King St. In a strange bit of irony, Sir John A McDonald once held a law office there.
It's in the process of being turned into a Woodburning Pizza place. Typical, tourist trap restaurant (and the third woodburning place downtown).
I'm gonna draft a letter to send to the paper. Did we ever come to a conclusion as to what the actual legend is behind the mural? Was it done because Davis Manning was given the ultimatium, the band or me? I'm gonna do a search, but I'm wondering if anyone remembers off the top of their head.

I guess we can't save it anymore, but It's still a shame, definately a heritage piece.

Unless we hold on to things, and preserve them, nothing will ever develop any historical significance. NMAS, you don't think it's important - fine. Some people do. Why do you have to rain on the parade? So what if you disagree; let those of us who think it should've been saved have our dream. But it's all for nought now as it's already been painted over anyway.

No offence but get some perspective, nothing the Hip does will ever have any historical significance in the grand sceem of things. You guys make it seem like this should be a national monument. Sure it was a neat artifact about the band and it is too bad it is gone but what can you do. I appreciate the band and everything they do for Us, charitiies and all the other good stuff. But histrical significance I don't think so. Maybe if Gord becomes P.M. and rewrites the charter of rights, then there will be some historical significance. :lol:

"History," like "culture" and all those big words, isn't just prime ministers or Picasso. Most people don't care about the AQHA Hall Of Fame, but those of us who like quarter horses do. Likewise, something of historical significance in terms of rock music, Canadian music, or even the cultural history of a city is legitimately important to the people who care about it. We can tell the difference between the Hip Wall and the Juno Beach Memorial, but it's possible to care about something small as well as something bigger.
Nobody suggested the Hip Wall should be a national monument, but the consensus seemed to be that it was a cool thing and it's too bad it's gone.

We are all entitled to our every irrelevance, or relevance......
I cringed when I heard how people were reacting when Robert Kennedy Jr. died a few years ago (or was it JFK Jr.?)
But then when Greg Moore died at Fontana Speedway, I was sad, though not as bad as some take a celebrities death......
It's all about what you're interested in.
