Why wasn't BobC eliminated? It had 11% of the vote last round?

I voted for Bobcaygeon and it hurts my heart.

Round 3 instructions: "Vote for the song you believe to be the weakest on Phantom Power and after 48 hours, we will remove the two songs that have the most votes. As before, a song must have at least 10% of the vote in order to be removed otherwise it will carry forward into the following round."
Only two songs were scheduled to be eliminated.

Don't tell me what the poets are doing...
I've grown to like Poets, but I used to skip over it a lot when playing this album and it used to bug me that it was the first release. Never thought it was as strong as others on the album. Obviously, I'm in the minority on that opinion, but there's no way it comes close to the other three remaining in my view.

Good song, but I never rated it with those other three, and still don't. "Penguin" is one of the best songs about family and parenting I've ever heard, and the other two are glorious, bona-fide, all-time-classic Hip masterpieces.
I just want to pause a moment and pay respects to "Thompson Girl," which seems to be a sadly overlooked cut even among the die-hards. A charming song with a great conceit - lovers snowed in for the winter - and a lovely, intimate recording of the sort I rather wish the Hip had done more of. It certainly didn't deserve to make the final cut, but it does deserve some sort of eulogy.
I don't know how you can be so wrong about Escape but so damn right about Thompson. Just an absolute master class in writing. "winterfighters" "rent-a-movie weather" have become part of my own personal lexicon.
And if you've ever tried to make a buck in a cold frigid northern town, well, this is your anthem isn't it.
I echoed the sentiments on Thompson girl in round 1, where I posted surprised to see it nearly hitting the 10% mark right out of the gate. Always thought "winterfighters shot on the car as well" meant the heater/defrost weren't functioning properly. Even if they weren't stranded at the unique motel, it wouldn't be a very comfortable drive. Any other interpretations? Rent-a-movie weather may be my favourite Gordism. In other Thompson girl related news, it looks like one of the nickel stacks will no longer be shooting a great plume of steam across the lake: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/ ... -1.4117616
Fitting that the 4 songs to receive 0 votes in round 1 made the final 4.
With half the polling stations currently reporting and tallys of 5, 6, 7 and 8 votes its far too close to call right now. Escape and emperor are my top 2, and I may have trouble deciding between em.

"Poets" snapped this 12-year-old teenybopper away from the claws of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys, so I'll never vote for it.
Don't get the Escape super-love either, it's kind of depressing.

right. BobC had 11% of the vote so it should have been eliminated

I interpreted it as only the top two vote getters would be eliminated, provided they had at least 10%. If more than two songs had 10%, it would still only be the top two eliminated.

I agree with your interpretation... I've always taken the "winterfighter's shot" line as being a broken down car heater. This is possibly the reason for being stranded at the hotel.
I've wondered if the lines "Grunt work somewhere between dream and duty, Poking through with all them shoots of beauty" were referencing the grind of touring, punctured with moments of audience connection. A live performer occasionally feels like they are living the dream but just as commonly, on the other end of the spectrum, there are feelings of going through the motions and doing your "duty" while playing to 40 people in Boise, Idaho (or Thompson, Manitoba) on a Tuesday night. Sometimes it falls into place, the music transcends, and and audience connection is made through "them shoots (or songs) of beauty". Maybe the timeline of the story is actually just a couple of days, waiting for the siege of a winter storm to pass while stranded in a hotel with a local girl met during a tour stop.
Then, off course, there is the 1982 Canadian movie 'Latitude 55 Degrees", which besides a corresponding latitudinal location (this time in Alberta, not Manitoba), has the parallels of a couple of strangers being stranded during a blizzard after a car breaks down.

I don't know how anyone in good conscience can call Poets and Bobcaygeon weaker links than Escape or Penguin. Great songs..but c'mon! Now I know how Hilary felt at the end of election night last year.

I'd rather hear Escape and Penguin than Poets or Bobcaygeon. It's not about them being deep cuts, I just naturally enjoy them more. This notion of there being a universal barometer for art quality is all ego and other Freud stuff.
TBH I thought it was a given that Escape was the hardcore favourite on PP, and am surprised to see it isn't. It's in my top three, with Gus and Courage. Johnny nailed the drums...anyone can pound out a beater, only a great drummer like him could match the tone and sentimentality of this song so perfectly. The recording is so perfect that it was tough to match in concert...and that means something considering what a live beast the Hip were.
RIP Jim Ellison.

"Valerie Loves Me"... one of my favourite 90's pop-rock songs. Never tire of hearing it.

Tough one these are all great songs but had to vote for another cop love song over "In Hindustan, where we stopped to rest our weary caravan."
